They Learned English FAST!

I know that immersion in another country is the fastest way to learn a new language, but they were almost fluent in 3 weeks!

And their English comprehension was off the charts.

India is a commonwealth country. Usually many of them use 20-25% English words while talking their native languages like road, bus, building, ball, sir, uncle etc. So it is not a tough task for Indian to learn English so fast.

Since India was once part of the British Empire (between 1858 and 1947), many Indians speak fluent English.

Plus, India has so many languages that English is a common language. If either boy had access to tv, DVDs, radio, and school, which I believe they did, they'd have already known a lot.

India has more English speaking people than any other country.

I would say that India has between 80 and 120 million people who read, write speak English fluently. To the extent, that they can read an issue of "National Geographic" and understand every word. And millions more who know words like "car", "bus", "train", "hot", "cold" "rain", "fast" etc.

In terms of absolute numbers of people who are very fluent, or whose first or major language is English, India is not number one, the US would be. But India is right up there, ahead of most countries.

Yeah but Dinesh and Ringu(?) did not originally know English and needed Amit to translate.

When Amit gave his big speech in English, it was clear that the audience's comprehension was more important than factual representation/continuity.

I was completely okay with that.

yes,
indians can speak english within 3 months of not uttering a word in america( as they get a chance to learn it like a baby from ground up which cant happen in india!). It is one of those things as a former english colony it is just embedded in the blood like no other nation in the world. Because in usa as it is a mother tounge it is all around you. so the language in your ear all the time! It is difficult to speak american way if you already carry indian english baggage. So clean slate learns right!
so do not be surprised!
