Updated: Thoughts On Comic-Con Shows?

As of this posting Conan has done two shows and there are two more to go. When I heard months ago he was going to take his show to Comic-Con I was really excited. I thought many years ago that late night shows should do their shows from this convention because when it is happening it is the center of the entertainment world and everyone is there. However, so far I am pretty disappointed with his first two shows.

I had hoped he would do some interviews or bits actually from the convention. Do some remote stuff from the floor with fans. Like he did in the Cuba episode. I actually went to Comic-Con in 2009 and the comedy writes itself. It is pretty funny and entertaining just walking around the place. I could see Conan having really funny interactions with attendees on the convention floor. I am really disappointed he hasn't done this. Maybe he will in the last two shows?

So far it is like he is holed up in some old theater away from the convention. I was really disappointed when they basically did a live Snickers commercial during the second show that ate up several minutes. Is that the best him and his writers could come up with? Let's see some of the actual convention. Go interview some crazy fans? That alone would be way funnier than a Snickers bit.

Besides the very opening bit of Mad Max, the first two shows have been pretty boring and not funny. I hope the last two he actually gets out and does something. What does anyone else think?

Edit and Update:

So his last show just aired. It was the best out of the four. Bigger guests and a surprise walk on guest. Overall I am a little disappointed. I had hoped to see Conan down at the convention center doing funny bits there. I really think he missed out on many funny opportunities. He said that he finally got to the convention floor and only walked around for 30 seconds and then left. I guess I just expected stuff from the convention and many walk on huge stars and bigger guests. They were there in San Diego. But don't get me wrong, I am really glad he at least did his show there. I think every late night show needs too. They were all off this week. And Kimmel doing his show at SXSW is totally lame. Conan said he is coming back next year to Comic-Con. So maybe next year it will be more fun.

What do you guys think? Did you like these shows? Or were they disappointing?

yes, that was weird when he said that.

Anyway, I loved the shows—and I agree, the eps got better and better, the last one being the best one. I'm not a total comic geek and I don't watch or read about every show he had on, so for me it was just pure entertainment, without any extreme expectations.

I got a little ticked off when some moron revealed the surprise guests on the final episode, but mainly because it was slightly disappointing to me. I've watched all the X-men films because they're there, but I'm not like super crazy about them.

But the interviews were fun. The GOT interviews gave me a few chuckles. Overall, I was fairly satisfied; however like you said, I do think they'll be a little more prepared with what they can do next year.

This may not be the time or place to say it though, but I am wondering if these episodes would've been more ludicrous had we had either of the Brians still working for Conan.

I sadly agree. I am currently watching the 3rd show. I was expecting Conan to do remotes and do location specific bits. Like when he was in Chicago, he did the bridge jump over a famous draw bridge. It was kind of funny, but it was more than in SD at Comic Con. All of the bits could have been done in LA in his normal studio. Like the Snickers bit? Really? You can go on the street and talk to people at least, and you waste time doing a promo for Snickers? Do that at home. I had such high hopes for this week. It's been basically normal Conan in a different theater.

Maybe they werent allowed to shoot material with the people there. Thats the only reason i can figure. I mean why else waste the golden opportunity?

In Vino Veritas.

I don't know. I'd think he would be allowed to walk around the main floor and video it. I see some thinking it was because of budget and didn't want to pay for the rights. But they did some bits with the Marvel characters (IKEA), and had to pay for them. At least do a remote around SD.

reply

The IKEA thing is probably safe under parody law, though. And even the bit with Batman vs. Superman, the logos were skewed and changed up a little.

But I was thinking about this a few days ago and realized that Conan's filmed remotes at major conventions and expos before, electronics ones and even video games ones. He's never shied away from showing logos and things.

So I really don't have an answer, then. Like someone above said, maybe he simply wasn't allowed to shoot on the floor, but why couldn't he have done a remote right outside? What about that crazy gay guy (the Madonna fan) he has running around sometimes, that dude could've gone around interviewing characters... etc etc

So who knows?

I wouldn't mind if he did some remotes in the general San Diego vicinity either, sans Comic-Con. There's the aquarium [edit: I meant SeaWorld], there's the SD Zoo, there's a school famous for biology, there's the beach at La Jolla that Conan could avoid, there must be tons of stuff down there to explore and film.

reply

Maybe. I don't know much about the parody laws. But Conan shot a remote at E3 (huge annual electronics/video games convention) a few years ago. So yeah, he's had to pay before with remotes at events. Billy Eichner is the guy you're thinking of. He did a Grindr remote with Conan earlier this year. I wonder if he came down to something simple that they didn't want to do any remotes or something, and not legal or money reasons. He was like a mile from the actual Comic Con convention.
