Updated: Thoughts On Comic-Con Shows?

As of this posting Conan has done two shows and there are two more to go. When I heard months ago he was going to take his show to Comic-Con I was really excited. I thought many years ago that late night shows should do their shows from this convention because when it is happening it is the center of the entertainment world and everyone is there. However, so far I am pretty disappointed with his first two shows.

I had hoped he would do some interviews or bits actually from the convention. Do some remote stuff from the floor with fans. Like he did in the Cuba episode. I actually went to Comic-Con in 2009 and the comedy writes itself. It is pretty funny and entertaining just walking around the place. I could see Conan having really funny interactions with attendees on the convention floor. I am really disappointed he hasn't done this. Maybe he will in the last two shows?

So far it is like he is holed up in some old theater away from the convention. I was really disappointed when they basically did a live Snickers commercial during the second show that ate up several minutes. Is that the best him and his writers could come up with? Let's see some of the actual convention. Go interview some crazy fans? That alone would be way funnier than a Snickers bit.

Besides the very opening bit of Mad Max, the first two shows have been pretty boring and not funny. I hope the last two he actually gets out and does something. What does anyone else think?

Edit and Update:

So his last show just aired. It was the best out of the four. Bigger guests and a surprise walk on guest. Overall I am a little disappointed. I had hoped to see Conan down at the convention center doing funny bits there. I really think he missed out on many funny opportunities. He said that he finally got to the convention floor and only walked around for 30 seconds and then left. I guess I just expected stuff from the convention and many walk on huge stars and bigger guests. They were there in San Diego. But don't get me wrong, I am really glad he at least did his show there. I think every late night show needs too. They were all off this week. And Kimmel doing his show at SXSW is totally lame. Conan said he is coming back next year to Comic-Con. So maybe next year it will be more fun.

What do you guys think? Did you like these shows? Or were they disappointing?

reply

Hate to say it but I agree with you. The comic con shows were overhyped and what we are getting is a typical show in a different venue. The audience is louder and more obnoxious (expected). The bits really aren't that funny (chris Parnell book signing). Thank god for dvr so I can ff through atrocious hunger games interview.

reply

Just wait until Saturday when the cast of the Justice League shows up as his special surprise guests! 😀

Is it really surprising that the most powerful man in the world should be a figure of controversy?

KalEx071,

He has to do something the next two shows. If not, it will be a total disappointment and a real missed opportunity. I am not talking just guests though. I am more talking comedy. I really think he needs to get out of the theater and down the street to the convention center and do some remote comedy bits. Interview fans on the convention floor and show up at a few panels and asks funny questions like a fan to the panel members. Those two ideas there are way funnier than the bits they have done so far. And I am not paid millions of dollars a year to come up with comedy bits.

reply

filmtenk,

Thanks for the reply. I found all the bits so far to not be very funny. Most were completely unfunny. The only thing I found funny about the Parnell book bit was that he was dressed like George RR Martin and the winter is coming line. Other than that it was just dumb and weird. I really think getting Conan to interact with fans on the floor and asking panel members questions like a crazy fan would be funnier than what they have done so far.

Unfortunately, Conan is on TBS and not NBC, so their budget is basically nothing in comparison. He couldn't show people in the audience in their costumes (on the second show, he only showed a non-descript woman) and the Batman v. Superman bit shows the logos were skewed and parodied.

I get the impression that they couldn't shoot at the convention because the place is basically jam-packed with copyrighted signs, materials, logos, characters, etc. NBC could probably get away with shooting there.

I really don't know.

So far I'm enjoying the shows, I mean I wasn't expecting anything amazing. All his away shows have been like this; just usually with more inside jokes related to the town.

reply

I never thought about that. I bet that's a huge part, if not the sole reason they don't shoot in the actual convention.

I was surprised they played that Coldplay song on the last episode. Must be a cheap song lol

scarlet steam engine,

Thanks for your reply. God I hope that is not why they are not doing anything from the convention center. I was there in 2009 and the place has gigantic posters up everywhere advertising all kinds of stuff. Even throughout town there are giant signs up advertising new TV shows and movies. If he would show anything it would be free advertising. I would find it hard to believe a studio would try to make a legal claim against showing a poster in the background. But who knows. People have attempted to sue for less. Anyway, they could just blur out the posters.

If all his away shows are like this that is really disappointing. I guess I was more expecting his Cuba show. That was all remote and out and about stuff. I used to watch Conan a lot when he was on NBC doing Late Night. But since he has switched to TBS at 11 I only watch him if there is a guest on I want to see. He seems to be mailing it in lately.

He's been mailing it in for five years now!

And he's on psych meds.

I got news for em. Theres gonna be hell to pay. Cause I aint Daddys little boy no more

reply

I agree. Pretty lame so far.

For some reason, I was assuming that he would be doing a lot of remote stuff right at the convention.

It doesn't seem like anything is clicking. The guests have been boring, the comedy bits have been lukewarm at best, and the episode of "The Flaming C" flat out sucked.

I'm thinking that he shouldn't have even bothered.

reply

He probably will do remotes after comic con. I disagree, however, because they promoted it as interviews with big ppl at comic con. I'm laughing my ass off so far!

reply

I hoping thathe final guests will be as impressive as they're being hyped to be.
'Conan on tje floor' or whatever people interviews would be nice *BUT* my mind IMMEDIATELY went to Triumph @ Comic-Con, imagine THAT hilarity. I was also hoping for some more
FOX, SONY/MARVEL or MARVEL STUDIOS actors/actresses to have been on to promote even things that don't have footage yet (X:APocalypse. Captain America: Civil War) Jen Lawrence was there & it didn't even come up, then Peter Dinklage was missing from the GoT's interview... WTF?!

I fell asleep during INCEPTION BUT I FEEL like I still saw it!

reply

patdog,

Triumph is another great idea. I figured his show tonight would be good with the two big casts of Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead but to me it's another dropped ball. Key cast members were missing. Andrew Lincoln, Peter Dinklage, Emilia Clarke, etc, did not show up. Plus, he ran out of time and did not even talk to many of the Game of Thrones casts members. Conan seemed actually like flustered and I'm out of time and don't know what to do at the end. WTF?! I don't want to hate on him and his show and I am really really happy he is there at Comic-Con doing a show but these shows are coming across like amateur hour.

reply

Triumph = YES! Would love that but that falls under the whole logos and stuff debate.

Conan is ran by WB, which doesn't own nor want to promote MARVEL - or, at least, as less as possible. MARVEL is owned by Disney, WB's main enemy. And especially since WB owns DC, MARVEL's enemy, there's even more fire there...

reply

Did they forgot to ask something from that one guy last night when GPW people were on stage? I mean they all got to talk but that one guy.

In Vino Veritas.

reply

pullomeri-1,

Yes, Conan ran out of time and did not even talk to Liam Cunningham from Game of Thrones. I thought he did not talk to even more people but I guess it was just him. So...on the last show he had Liam Cunningham come out on stage so he could interview him. Liam came out and told Conan to F off. It was kind of funny. I thought the running out of time thing seemed a bit amateurish. These shows are not live and I really think they could have done a little editing before airtime and made it look a little better and maybe got a question into Liam.

reply

I'm sure the remote stuff takes a long time to edit down to the best bits. I hope we'll maybe see some next week.

reply

Lord Vader,

Is that something Conan routinely does? Show bits that he did like a week or so before? His Comic-Con shows were this week. I'm not planning on watching his show next week for Comic-Con stuff.

reply

It's happened before, but you'd assume if he shot something good at Comic Con they'd have done away with some of the less funny bits and aired them.

Then again, his remotes can be as long as 9 minutes and as you said he's run out of time on several occasions, so here's hoping they are holding onto some material for next week

reply

"here's hoping they are holding onto some material for next week"

that's what I'm hoping for too.

reply

Agreed all over, and also I think it's tough to interview full casts even though that has become all the rage. But the GOT, Hunger Games, and X Men interviews were very stiff.

And yeah, NO remotes? Unless I'm forgetting something? That's just a huge mistake

reply

I have to agree with you. I was very excited when the Comic Con trip was announced, but the four Comic Con shows ended up being pretty disappointing. I thought the whole point of taking the show to Comic Con was to take the opportunity to shoot some hilarious remotes at the convention, just like they've done every other time they've taken the show on the road (Atlanta, New York, Dallas, Chicago, etc.), and I was very surprised when the entire week of shows was aired and not a single remote segment was shown. How bizarre.
