Just my opinion, but I think there was a huge barrier between Mavis and Sandra during that last conversation. They both have totally different MO’s in interacting with each other in that last scene, and they are both in their own twisted worlds.
Sandra’s MO from the very beginning was to win over Mavis’ friendship and approval. She desperately seized that opportunity in the end to suck up to her when Mavis was at rock bottom. She started spewing the whole “everyone is jealous of you I wish I could be you blah blah”. Mavis was still in shock over the course of events that happened the previous night. She was more emotionally damaged than ever. So Mavis’ MO here was to hear someone, anyone, reassure her that she was still better than everyone else and above everything/everyone, and Sandra gave her that boost Mavis needed.
Mavis’ reply to Sandra’s request of going with her with her to Minneapolis can be construed in many different ways, but I think it was condescending. It was a really sad scene. We have a glimmer of hope that Sandra will finally feel wanted and appreciated, and Mavis will finally do something kind for someone and perhaps begin a meaningful friendship with someone. We’re ready for a happy ending, and it doesn’t end up being the case. Sandra gets knocked down, as usual, and Mavis walks away with a snide remark. Sandra had just gone over how their hometown was disgusting and beneath Mavis, yet Mavis says to Sandra that she’s “good there”.
