The Problems With Jupiter Ascending Begin With The Title

Jupiter tells us that she was born under the sign Leo at the start of the film. She tells us that the planet Jupiter was ascending on the horizon; but that does NOT make Jupiter the Ascendant in her natal horoscope, not in the province of astrology. The Ascendant is a sign, not a planet. She may have had Taurus or Libra or some other constellation on her horizon when she was born. She may have had the planet Jupiter within the domain of that constellation at the same time, and, yes, that could be significant in one way or another, but the planet is not her Ascendant, and the sloppiness of the title was a harbinger of the sloppiness of the whole project.

PS Fun fact, just ‘cause I’m feeling snarky. (I know: What’s new, right?) An unprotected human tossed into deep space, as Caine was, will pass out in under 15 seconds. I, in the interest of snarkdom, put a stopwatch on the scene. He stayed conscious and unprotected for not quite 38 seconds; and, no, his dog genes didn’t give him special powers in that environment. A mammal is still a mammal. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy.

This was a stupid movie.

Caine isn't human

The title seems more fantastical than really relating to the film much.

Creative as the Wachowskis were, they always were sloppy in the science dept. I heard a lot of debates about the Human Farms and using humans as batteries in their "Matrix" films, or how a lot of stuff in their "V for Vendetta" movie could never happen. I think they go more for symbolism than doing actual scientific/historical/political (and in this case) astrological research.

It also bothered me that they threw around "genetic manipulation" in this movie like some kind of magic word to make everything possible.

It's not the best sci-fi/fantasy film I've seen, but I do still like it to a degree.
