Why was that guy's voice so messed up?

Did it ever explain why the main villain's voice was so messed up? If so, I must have missed it, and it bothered me throughout the entire movie. Why make a main character's voice messed up without an explanation? It was a terrible distraction from an already convoluted story line.

reply

It's not made explicit, but my interpretation that his voice was strange because of his extreme old age (he's older than Kalique, who is 14,004) and his general dissatisfaction; he whispers because he can hardly summon the necessary effort to speak. As for his screams/shouts, they're essentially symptomatic of his insanity - you realise quite early on that he's mentally unstable, and he gets worse as the film progresses.

He should have just taken a bath.

reply

He did - you can see him bathing in his spaceship as it approaches the planet Jupiter (I love being able to write that). I think the idea is that he's much, much older and more mentally disturbed than his sister Kalique; he's damaged in ways that no regenerative bath will heal, so while he has a perfect and youthful body he's utterly warped on the inside. His voice is the most overt manifestation of that.

Oh i see. I couldn't remember that part :)

That voice was reminiscent of The Godfather.

reply

Thinks he's lord voldemort

reply

it's an affection some people use to make themselves feel more powerful.
by speaking so quietly, he forces others to strain to hear him.
it's not messed up, it is his choice to affect this tone

reply

Overacting. Chewing scenery.
It's just bad acting. Now, was it on purpose? That's the question.

reply

Yup, his performance was just all over the place - in a bad way (not in an entertaining unpredictable psycho way.) In fact it did look like some of his scenes were cut out ; I'm basing this on the abruptness of the storytelling (the other siblings had just as much,if not more screen time, and that doesnt make sense if we're supposed to see him as the big bad. Plus there was a key dialogue of his where they chose to not show his face, which makes me think the directors tried to cut him out as much as possible. I wonder why they couldnt guide him better?

I am amazed that he got the Oscar for acting this year. I thought his Stephen Hawking was so completely hollow - he got the outer trappings of the man but none of the emotions.

reply

Maybe Hawking didn't show his emotions much. I'm just rambling. Don't even know the man, nor have I watched the movie. I intend to, soon if possible.

Horrible as he was in Jupiter, he did make me laugh plenty. "I CREATE LIFE!"

Sorry, my wording was a bit off; I meant it was difficult for the viewers to connect with him emotionally. When I say I want to see the emotional complexity of a character, I mean that wondrous thing that actors do when they make us understand how a character is feeling. It doesnt necessarily mean that the emotion has to be laid out bare on the screem - it can be something subtle and hinted at through the eyes. [A brilliant example would be Colin Firth's extremely stoic but extremely empathetic performance in A SINGLE MAN.]

When I watched THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING I could see that Eddie had captured Stephen's movements, gestures, look etc, but I really couldnt care less about the character (even though what he goes through physically should've made it so much more easier to 'feel' for him). I felt that Felicity Forgot-her-surname completely carried the film and Eddie got the Oscar for looking like Stephen Hawking.

It reminded me of when I first heard agent smith's voice. I thought, whoa that's weird. Now it's iconic.

This was just as over the top but less successful.

reply

Well, with Agent Smith, it worked. Agent Smith's deliberate nonchalant and sarcastic way of speaking made him seem even more sinister. With the Jupiter Ascending bad guy (I can't be bothered to look up the character's name), it was just annoying, distracting, and confusing.

YES. Thank you.

reply

Because villain's are always played by some weirdo. But you should be able to understand them. One of the main downfalls of this movie is trying to decipher what half the people in this movie are saying.

reply

I agree! I couldn't understand 80% of the things he said.

There was a scene, where they mentioned that Caine bitten a royalty person (in the neck?) so Stinger assumed responsibility and was punished for that. From that moment I assumed that he -the messed up voice dude- was that person but as the movie progressed -and they faced each other- that never was mentioned (or didn't made it to script or final cut).

reply

That certainly wasn't the intention. In the trailers in his bath scene you can see that his neck is fine. However as that scene was cut you can choice to interpret it as you have suggested. It just wasn't intended.

reply

That isn't the reason? I know Caine said he tore out a royalty's throat. We never saw Balem's neck so I assumed it was him, but they never mentioned it. They also failed to mention why Caine tore someone's throat out yet doesn't remember doing it. I know he is part wolf, but that had to be a deleted scene or something. The voice was so bizarre that it had to be a throat injury right?

.

Redmayne is definitely channeling his inner Voldemort.

It was so obvious that is the voice he was attempting to emulate...so distracting.

Movie pretty much sucked and that was just the cherry on top.

reply

Voldemort is just a rip off of other, more memorable villains in more memorable movies. We're talking about a franchise that's inspired grown men and women to play an absurd fantasy version of soccer while "riding" broomsticks.
