Any other show with romance like Sybil/Tom?

I want to watch some upstairs/downstairs forbidden romance. Preferable upstairs male/downstairs female this time?

"Devious Maids" has Remi and Valentina, but they're only seasons one and two, and it's pretty boring in season 2.

US Netflix has Grand Hotel. Like DA after three Red Bulls.

I checked out Grand Hotel, while it does seem interesting but I find having to enjoy it by reading subtitles a tad annoying.

t's an acquired taste/skill, but without it you're cutting yourself off from most of the world's best movies, and a lot of TV. If you stick with it, the story may be so compelling that you don't notice the extra effort, and it makes you watch the show, instead of have it on while you surf.
Some nights the only broadcast I check is the foreign stuff on Mhz, one of the PBS subchannels in my area.

I agree 100% about subtitles. You actually have to pay attention which makes the whole experience more enjoyable. I have been trying to watch some classics that for one reason or another I missed over the years. Recently, I sat down and watched Tokyo Story which always places in the top ten of the greatest films of all time. After watching it (subtitles and all), I can see why. It is moving and heartbreaking and beautifully made. When I think of all the great movies I would have missed if I passed on any that were subtitled, I shudder.

Where you are, perhaps, but TIIAVBP*. Also, I think comparing the Irish rebel chauffeur to a royal who was the queen's first cousin and a prince in his own right seems a little outside the scope of the OP's original quest for a romantic master/mistress - servant liaison.

So it's up to her if she chooses to watch it.

Old school, but there's always Under Capricorn. But it's all aftermath.

And The Valley of Decision, with Irish housemaid and the son of the house:

Re: the first two suggestions (warning: melodrama alert, although if you don't mind the melodrama in Downton, these two shouldn't be a problem).

* The Moth (1997) Working class male and higher class woman
* The Grand (1997) Servant class female and business-owner-class man

This one is lovely: shopgirl and higher class man (although she never worked for him)
The Wingless Bird (1997)

This next one is slightly cheesy, and rather sweet

Could The Jewel in the Crown count?

I've never seen it so I don't know if there is a large difference in wealth but it has a romance between an English woman and an Indian man in colonial India so there would be a social divide.

Apparently Indian Summers has one too.

Re: The Jewel in the Crown
The romance to which you referred has an extremely unhappy ending. I don't think that was what the OP was hoping for!

It's a more appropriate recommendation than "Victoria"

reply

Oh, whenever I come across these threads asking for recommendations, there are always suggestions that are very different from what the OP was asking for. I didn't interpret the recommendation of Victoria as a program with an upstairs/downstairs relationship (per the OP's request). I interpreted that recommendation as someone throwing in the suggestion of another period drama.

Cranford nearly always comes up when there's a request for recommendations, even though it is very different from Downton Abbey (or whatever program's board a request might appear on, such as Mr. Selfridge).

I can't actually speak for the Original Poster but the Original Post doesn't say anything about the romance ending happily. Sybil/Tom doesn't end happily after all.
