No Chemistry Between Rachel McAdams and Owen Wilson

I've only just started watching this movie and is it just me or is there ZERO chemistry between these two actors? I think she had better chemistry with the guy in the movie Red Eye!

Every present-day American (iirc) other than Owen is either a forgettable foil or an ignorant jerk. Even Gil is a bit of a goof.

Like others have posted, their lack of chemistry was an intentional plot device. The only things that they like about each other is for him she is sexy and for her he is successful. Both Gil and Inez pay one another those compliments a few times during the early part of the film. Her being "fetching" and him being a success was all there was to that relationship.

Its so nice to see that there are people out there actually able to comprehend simple plot devices. It seems like everyone is so focused on finding faults with films that they wind up completely miscomprehending even the simplest of plot devices.

Which makes it shallow and painfuly obvious.

See above answers. They are supposed to be at odds with one another. A terrible match.
More notably, Rachel McAdams's character Inez was having an affair with the character Paul, and I didn't see much chemistry between that pair either.

I was going to say the same thing! I thought they had great chemistry in Wedding Crashers, and in this film, not at all. Rachel is really a great actress, think of how different her characters in those two movies were.

They were supposed to have chemistry in Wedding Crashers and they weren't supposed to have chemistry in Midnight in Paris. Its mind boggling to me that so many people could miss such a blatantly obvious aspect of this film. They had absolutely nothing in common with one another and this was basically thrown in your face in practically every scene they were in together. They were only together because he thought she was sexy and she liked that he was a successful screenwriter. Again, every scene they are in together your being told one way or another that they have absolutely nothing in common.

My advice, try paying a bit more attention when watching a film and maybe, just maybe, you won't have such problems comprehending such obvious plot devices.

Try being a little less condescending. Jesus.

Jesus, I was purposely being condescending, so why would I try and be less condescending. That would kind of defeat the purpose wouldn't it?. Thats like asking someone who made a purposely amusing/comedic post to try and be a little less amusing. Look, I get that people sometimes miss things in films. People get up and go to the bathroom, or to buy more popcorn or soda, or even look at some silent text they received on their phone. Even I have been guilty of this type of thing before, but this is an aspect of the film that was blatantly thrown in your face for the entirety of the movie. Every single scene they were in together BLATANTLY threw it in your face that these two people were CLEARLY not compatible with one another and were only with each other due to status (her) or being sexy (him). The only people I would give a pass too are people that suffer from severe ADD. In fact, if there is one fault I found with the film its that this aspect of the film was overdone and so blatantly thrown in people's faces.

Honesty, in all of the romantic comedy films I have ever seen, and I have seen a LOT due to my wife being such a big fan of the genre, this has to be one of the single most blatant attempts ever put on film to show that 2 people were completely not right for one another. The bottom line - there wasn't an ounce of romanticism between the two, that was 100% done on purpose, it was one of the most important aspects of this film, and again it was shown (to some extent) in every single scene the 2 had together in the entire film. Since I honestly don't believe that many of the people that have posted this question (and there have been quite a few) have severe ADD, it comes down to simply paying attention to the film and using basic reasoning and common sense to figure it out.

Absolutely and "blatantly" right! Condescending is "blatantly" called for here!

reply

Why shouldn't they be (politely) condescending - the OP was pretty ridiculous in that they ran onto this forum without even looking at more than one minute of the film!

Is there meant to be chemistry between the 2 you should ask yourself instead, cause frankly Rachel McAdams was like a female Adolf Hitler lite while Owen Wilson was a good ol chap, they didn't belong together so why should there be chemistry?
