Tribute or exploitation?

The story "Frank" is clearly based on the life of "Chris Sievey" whose alter ego was the character "Frank Sidebottom" (Feel free to google it) and who died 21st June 2010 after a short battle with cancer and who died peniless though that is no indication of Chris Sievey's comedic genius...

I would like to believe that Jon Ronson who co-wrote the screenplay for this did so as a tribute to Chris Sievey and not a cynical exploitation...

It should be said that to save Chris Sievey the indignity of a paupers burial Jon Ronson (And others) did back a campaign to raise money for Chris's funeral which raised £21,631.55

One of my fond memories was seeing the ever awkward but uncrushable Frank Sidebottom (Chris Sievey) on the tv...

RIP Chris

Everyone knows 'Little Frank' was the brains behind it all.

I think the dedication in the end credits tells you all you need to know.

Apart from the head it had nothing to do with the great Frank Sidebottom.

I'd say it was more of a "tribute" (if that's the right word) to Captain Beefheart (and possibly other "out there" musicians -some have mentioned Daniel Johnson, I saw elements of Mark E. Smith) - the music and the way he drilled the band were pure Van Vliet. Frank Sidebottom wrote (brilliant) comedy songs and did skits on Queen and other big rock bands. He didn't write avant garde music like Frank in this movie. As far as I know, Frank Sidebottom was NOT mentally ill.

In a very vague way, real-life Frank's determination to walk the walk may be considered an influence, but it's a stretch. The movie may be dedicated to him, but that doesn't mean the story necessarily has anything to do with him.
