Oh brother, just what people who live at home need right now!!

Another movie ripping on them. as if it isnt bad enough that people can't get loans or roommates or a girl and didnt get a raise this year due to the bad ecomony. Yeah hollywood keep it up. It's hard out here. One bedroom apartments go for 800+ a month.. Then god forbid your car breaks down and then you got 1000$ a year car insurance. Yeah , my heart goes out to those who have to endour this torture, hopefully the movie will bomb and go away. But i dont think we heard the last of these movies.. Trust me. being out here aint all it's cracked up to be..

In Hollywood/tv land though there are different standards e.g. have a basic minimum wage job & you can afford to live in a nice apartment in Manhattan. We can't expect them to be realistic about the matter.

If you actually watched the movie you'd see that the movie is not at all judgmental of Jeff. In fact he's easily the most likable character and is somewhat of the hero of the story.

"Where do you want to go?"
"Wherever you want to take me."

reply

he also hasnt dated a girl in over a decade!

yes likeable, but he hates himself for what he is...a slacker mooch in his mom's house who will never be with a woman again.

Yes, OP, do try watching the film. It helps you not look like a ranting doofus. Just so you know, you may flip your shtick around and do a 180 on your criticism here after you actually see it...

reply

i quite liked it because i related to him so much. it didnt feel like it was ripping on people like us at all.

So, who's the one "ranting like a doofus" here? Because it sure doesn't seem to be the OP.

Well, now it's you actually, seeing as you clearly haven't seen the film either. I agree that there's some truth to the idea that Hollywood reinforces that particular stigma, but that is absolutely not what's going on with Jeff, Who Lives at Home. The OP was speaking in general terms, but obviously using this film as the latest example, and having not seen it he really comes off foolish in doing so since he couldn't be more wrong. Why you're defending his stance while also having not seen the film, I have no idea. So yea, you're the one ranting like a doofus, agreed?

It's funny, 'cause the film actually does an excellent job of not feeling cliched and stereotypical at all. The main character is a slacker and a stoner, but that's not all he is and they do a great job of showing a very realistic human being, rather than the cartoon you seem to suspect. Based on the types of things you're raving about, I bet you'd find it refreshing. Open your mind; see the film. At the very least you'll realize what makes you wrong about this.

If you haven't see it, stop acting like you know anything about it's intent.

"Specificity?"

Jeff lives at home because he spends his whole day smoking pot and watching the movie "signs" over and over again. He doesn't live at home because of the economy, he lives at home because he doesn't try. I know many people who live at home and are trying their best, which is much different than someone who is just living off their parents because they can. I assume you are basing your opinions on the trailers and not the actual movie. I think you would feel differently if you saw it.

Before you generalize and berate a film because of its title, did you bother to see it, or read anything about it?

The titular character in this movie has very little to do with the majority of adult children living in their parent's home. He doesn't work. He spends his mother's money buying pot to smoke in her basement. He ponders life in relation to a different, lousy movie. He probably couldn't get laid in a whorehouse with a fistful of Franklins.

Jake: How often does the train go by?
Elwood: So often that you won't even notice it.

reply

oh. my bad.. then this dude needs to get a job. sorry..

Give me a break about the entire apartments are expensive trip. People, if you live in an urban area (i do) or pretty much anywhere else they rent rooms for like 100 dollars a week. So you start with that, eventually you work your way up to an affordable apartment. Dont use the economy or high rent prices or any of that bull, If you really wanted to get up and go you wouldve done it by now.

good news! its not too late to stop being a douche. Yes i knew a friend who was just like jeff, but really how proud of yourself are you still living in the basement torturing your folks?

"I was attacked by a coked up whore and a crazy dentist!"

vamp, i hope your not talking to me because i got a condo with my girl so you must mean someone else....

why cant there be movies about hollywood life where not everyone makes it big time and has to live in hotels or a car. Why must hollywood rip the average folk yet never show the fact people suffer everyday just to get simple screen time.

reply

hollywood. the true story.. lots of promises in the dark, dont you open your heart....

Ha! I also know a Jeff that basically fits that description. He's not a pothead though, so I know we're not talking about the same person.
