Kacy Catanzaro is a wildcard?

Seriously?

There is an interest in keeping females in the running to maintain female viewership and I think they are willing to fudge things a bit to make that happen IMO. There is no American Kunoichi. Maybe there should be to take advantage of women's special strengths. That being said, I'm pretty sure that Catanzaro could finish stage two given the chance and she likely eventually will. There are some pretty impressive women this season and the producers are really happy about that, but that doesn't mean that anyone of them can't make a wrong step at any time, look at Geoff Britten, *beep* happens.
So now they have a lot invested in Graff, and she is as good as anyone else out there gender notwithstanding. I would put money on her finishing stage two and maybe even stage three which is something I am almost certain that Catanzaro can't do. Some of the things in stage three she just doesn't have the reach for.

Honestly, seeing a well built athletic guy keeps my attention more than a female who is there and not performing well. I mean did you see the Olympics and that Tonga guy? He became a sensation and that is PLENTY effective for a female audience, I assure you. And in general women can be pretty catty towards other women so for the general audience I don't know if that's the case. I'm probably guilty of it to an extent as well. In general though, I certainly like it when the ladies can succeed, but they have to actually succeed first. Meagan Martin is probably still my sentimental fave even over Jesse. But I couldn't tell you half the names of the other women who get more promo time than what their actual run turns out to be.

I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying that I believe that is their thinking about the matter. Catanzaro is good. The thing is in this game it takes only one bad day to get people to think you are bad. The very best competitors we get to see make maybe three or four runs per season. If they get DQd on their first regional, that is all we will see of them that year. I have seen people on every season who wipe out early who I can tell really have the right stuff. Tyler Yamaguchi comes to mind. He actually stayed in ANW *because* of Catanzaro. He could have been put in as a wild card and I wouldn't have objected.

I think the female wildcards are more for the purpose of keeping male viewership than female. The female viewers like watching the men do their thing.

It's certainly not true for everyone but I'm sure there are a significant number of men who only watch this show to see the women.

The women can be pretty amazing, but they aren't the only reason I watch.

reply

False.

I'll say maybe a very small number.

I wanna watch people get far. Unfortunately, the majority of women can't get very far.

Last time, Kacy messed up on the trampoline. This time, she hit the trampoline pretty much spot on and still came up short. She's probably too short to do this obstacle. Maybe next year they'll lower the propeller bar a couple of inches so she can do it.

reply

I think it's probably a combo that she's too short and also too light. She just can't get the same kind of bounce that someone taller/heavier can - even Jessie Graff has a few inches and pounds on her. I think Kacy's gotten a pass too many times but I did feel bad for her this run, because I don't think there was a lot more she could have done with the trampoline to make it to the bar.

reply

I doubt any remedy would be strictly for her benefit. The likelihood is high that the propeller bar won't be there permanently just because they change obstacles constantly.
