Why Couldn't Maleficent just be evil?

For years Maleficent was seen as one of the best villains Disney had ever made.

So when I heard about this movie I was excited to see the evil witch come back in live action.

Instead we got Maleficent being the hero through contrived events.

Why couldn't they just let Maleficent be evil? Why go through all these hoops to not only rationalize her actions but turn her into the good guy?

This movie was a massive disappointment.

I agree. I was disappointed in the fact that the whole reason she was evil in the first place was because of a brokenheart... ?

This is my two cents: being evil just for the heck of it makes a character rather bland and one-dimensional, and not redeemable at all. Not to mention, cursing a helpless newborn infant...how is that supposed to be tough and bad-*ss? Just saying. LOL

If the character isn't written well then of course they will be bland and one-dimensional. A villain doesn't necessarily need a reason to be one. There are some people who just like to cause pain for the fun of it and that's actually terrifying when you think about it. That there is no root cause for them to do what they do, they just do it without a second thought.

Whooooaaa!
I wanted to read this because I thought it was an interesting observation about the Maleficent Witch just being evil.. and there's a huge debate about flipping Hitler and stuff ...
back to Disney , folks , please

I agree entirely.

The mistress of all evil should have stayed evil

Agreed.

Indeed, I wanted to see a film about a female villain and I got this? At least in Cinderella they kept the stepmother as a bad guy. I feared they would make her a saint and turn the prince into the evil one or something.
