Ridiculous Plot Hole

Why would Cobra implement an 'abort' option into the nuclear briefcase? Even if they wanted a failsafe in case Joe captured the device (implausible b/c Joe would never risk civilian casualties to target Cobra), wouldn't they at least password protect it? Ridiculous deus ex machina.

reply

When Roadblock grabbed the briefcase at the end, I was hoping that it would have a 3 digit combination lock.

reply

Id say the worst part was the entire design on Zeus. The dropped rods will just burn up on re entry

reply

Not necessarily because the movie tells us that the rods were made of tungsten which has the highest melting point of all the elements

reply

Tungsten has a high melting point in a vacuum. That's why light bulbs work without the tungsten burning up. Crack the glass on a bulb and watch how quickly the tungsten burns. Once the rods from space enter the earth's atmosphere, they will burn up quickly.

reply

Actually you guys are wrong. This is/was a real weapon the US explored a couple decades ago as part of the 'Star Wars' project in the Reagan years. The point of the kinetic weapon was it's simplicity. You simply dropped a rod from orbit and targeted it to take out a tank or whatever. Clearly it didn't have enough kinetic energy to do what was displayed in the movie however. I imagine the 'burning up while entering earth's atmosphere' you're referring to is when an object at a high velocity relative to the earth (e.g. a meteor) hits the atmosphere. Different from something dropped from geosynchronous orbit or even lower.

reply

If you drop something in orbit, it stays in orbit...

reply

You are the only one who gets physics.

reply

Wrong they are still working on it. its called Rods From god and has the force of a nuke

reply

No it wouldn't the u.s government is already working on kinetic bombardment technology

reply

1. You drop something in orbit, it stays there. To make it fall to Earth, you have to decrease its sped sufficiently for it to be on a collision course with Earth. That can be achieved by thrusting the object retrograde(opposite direction of its movement) or pushing it with a great force that way. The rods are made of tungsten so they dont burn up. They are slick so the atmosphere doesnt slow them down too much. Their kinetic energy is so great it is even more powerful than a nuke(not as powerful as in the movie to lift the Thames though, but would destroy London for sure). I see this technology happen in some 10-20 years.

reply

Go look up kinetic kill weapons

If it's gods intent to kill or harm me I will stick a .45 in his face to

reply

Because the whole point was to blackmail the world leaders. Cobra Commander tells everyone in the room that he would cancel the firing if they paid him. Hence the cancel button.

reply

Cancel button will just stop the release of the rods. Thus, maintaining threat. There's no need to destroy those satellites.

And, even if they needed a fail safe backup in case their enemies took control of satellites against them, then, should the blowing-all-up button be in a different briefcase, so they can counter it if their activation case was stolen by their enemies?

Which brings me to another stupid thing I pointed out in another post. The Joes should have waited for world leaders to agree alliance, prompting a cancel in activating the drops. Then, secure the case, then, take the villains down.

This movie is just one big mess.

reply

they were not holding the world for ransom of money but actually give over there nations to him

reply

Also why does the abort button destroy the Zeus satellites instead of simply stopping them dropping their rods?

reply

[deleted]

generally for this type of movie i just go with it.

but i genuinely thought when the cancel button was pressed surely all that needs to happen is for the tungsten rods not to be deployed. there is no need to destroy the satellites at all. now it could be some kind of goodwill gesture on the part of the bad guys. but they are bad guys so i wonder if they need a goodwill gesture.

reply

There was a plot?

reply

The plot was not great. The dialogue was horrible. Its like stop the street ghetto talk in movies, it cheapens and ruins the movie. Why would they kill Duke, the main character. I cringed at parts of this movie. Yes, some scenes were great like the mountain scene with Snake Eyes and that girl, but the street ghetto talk was making me want to cover my ears, the people around the world are not all street ghetto talking. After watching this sequel, don't make another. If you do another G.I. Joe, make a reboot. They did with Superman and got it right.

reply

the people around the world are not all street ghetto talking.

No, only the ones under 25.

reply

Its not a plot hole. It's like no one on here knows what a plot hole his. It is rather just something stupid done in movies to let the good guys win easily and tie up some lose ends.

reply

No, Cobra always wins because they keep the threat alive. The only losers in the film are Zartan and Firefly, who aren't going to be in the sequel unless they find advanced NanoTechnology.

Now let's beat up that OLD Bastard George Carlin, he'd appreciate it!

reply

Moreover, for the major nuclear powers, even an all-out launch only sends about half of their arsenal. A reserve is always held for a counter-strike.

reply

Also, since the mechanism of the device is gravity, wouldn't the rods still fall? Not to mention the satellites themselves crashing to the earth as well?

Also also Cobra Commander was clearly talking to the guys in the satellites on his headset. So if he wanted them to fire he didn't need the briefcase.
