stunned that so many people liked this movie

all of the characters are beyond stupid and make the dumbest decisions over and over again (justin long tape measuring the basement was funny tho), the plot is all over the place, the random jump cuts are incredibly pretentious and reek of the director screaming "i'm an artiste!", the subplot with the serial killer was nearly entirely pointless, so many loose ends don't wrap up, so many unintentionally hilarious moments, so many logical errors, etc. even the reveal of what the monsters really are wasn't all that clever or interesting. they're inbred, that's it? so why do they have superhuman strength?

my theater was laughing the whole time. really stunned that it has a 92% on RT and people on this very website are calling it "the best horror movie in years". this was a mess. i'm really curious to know why people are raving about it.

This movie was meh even before it turned pretty bad.

No idea what film people watched. Maybe it was the UK film called Barbarians. The 2022 film begins poorly thought-out and quickly degenerates into stale tropes and then just stalls to show us a rapist who flees the state to visit a property that might fetch him enough to cover the cost of a used Yugo.

There was simply NO need to introduce weird creatures into the plot. Or even Keith or AJ. Tess alone in a nice house (in a nice neighborhood vs. an abandoned one) who suddenly discovers space under the house inhabited by bad people doing bad things (and now she's unable to leave) would've been far more sinister and plausible.

Definitely not the best at all. I much prefer The Menu to this, tho totally different types of films. Even Smile is better.

It was exciting to find out just what kind of situation she had gotten herself into, the sense that "something is off" yet nothing obvious has happened. I loved how she was laying in bed at night and the door just opened!

The dungeon exploration was exciting aswell - until it turned out to be guarded by a grey, dark-dwelling monster. By the time she was trying to feed the captives it had gotten completely goofy and all the horror elements had fizzled out.

I finished the movie as a mere formality of watching through what i'd already started.

I don't know, now that I am reading this and thinking back, it's actually pretty good in retrospect. I think it has a bit more pizazz than Smile now that time has passed.

I just couldn't take the monster seriously and the movie wasn't interesting anymore. It picked up again when we got to follow the old guy's shopping and visits and the whole revelation, but by then the movie was alrrady ending.

I get it. Not as memorable as it should be.

Someone on IMDb summed this up perfectly for me; 'Starts strong but falls off a cliff'. The third act is literally laughable. The strong performances are better than the film deserved. 5.5/10
