No need to be creative anymore or original anymore in indie cinema

Ooh another quarter life crisis post-grad what do I do with my life oh I'm now in a relationship quirky subtle gritty digital indie movie that got picked up by IFC and played at big festivals!

What's the point of people trying to be creative anymore when this is what gives the film festivals, publications, and audiences a $#$# on?

It's sad, pathetic, and ashame to those out there actually trying to entertain us, and for all those that have.

Just call this Hannah Takes the Stares Part 2: Even More Boring and Unoriginal.

And the best part is that it's shot on a 7D, meaning that it'll inspire more 20 somethings to go out and affordably make more movies just like this! As the other unoriginal ones already have! Thanks indie cinema for going down the $#$#ter.

It's so nice to know that I am not alone with that opinion. I really felt I was. Thank you for proving me wrong, I hope there are a million others like us out there, and that half of them run film festivals.

You might want to actually see the movie before you trash it. Conceptually it sounds pretty cliched, but it is very funny, well shot and pretty fantastic all around.

IMO, I think most indie films scream, "I'm a post grad loser searching for the meaning of life." But for some odd reason, I'm drawn to burn outs like the characters in these kinds of movies.

I do think that this genre is vastly overdone, but it's nice to know that there are a bunch of them to pull out of the dust and watch on a rainy day when you're feeling kind of crappy.

With that being said, I think this movie looks rather ienteresting (in a rainy day watchable way). I like movies that feature different looking people versus the typical Hollywood leading lady. I'd give this film a chance before I bash it.

Cheers.

Just because your movies weren't picked, doesn't mean you guys have to knock on this.

Nobody wants to see these films. They're crap. And you don't have to be one of the outsiders to think that. There is a reason these films don't even make their print costs back after numerous articles, "festival raves" and the good folks of Brooklyn trying to shove them down everyone's throat.

CAUSE NO ONE WANTS TO SEE THEM!!!!!!

Not that I totally disagree, but do you know the lengths Hollywood goes to in shutting down potential compition? In Australia there was a big effort to start a rival to Hollywood due to the good weather and light theire. Hollywood aggressively bought and trashed the budding studios- to this day Austrailian filmmaking has lagged behind.
Do you know why so much crap is produced by Hollywood-- not only to placate unions and actors w/ a more content stream of $s needed to live the life, but also to drown out by #s the potential competitors from other countries or outside LA.
I would be more pissed at this.....

All true.

When it's a "festival favorite" at Sundance, that's usually a red flag in my opinion. Just because it's an "indie" film doesn't mean it's automatically good.

I *am* a postgrad loser struggling to find any purpose in life. One that just graduated from NYU film school at that. And you know what?

I frakking hate these movies too.

I haven't seen this one, but completely agree that this whole wave needs to disappear. I've got no problem with those types of characters, but damn, put them in an interesting movie where stuff actually happens!

Personally I'm totally down for people making low budget films - if they know what they're doing. And mainly I'm talking story-wise. Most of these are just meandering slice of life films with no character arcs, flimsy premises, and bizarre dialogue. Again, haven't seen this one in particular but in general...I heartily agree with your dislike of the "genre."

well you better follow the crowd - the loser who made this flick just got an hbo series and a film deal this week - they will bomb but that's hollywood

Are you now complaining? People, Garden State was the low point of this whole genre, that was an awful, awful emo hipster movie, and everyone seems to love it! You might aswell go to those boards and bash that movie.

And now, when something awesome like Scott Pilgrim tries to pull a twist in such a tired genre, no one sees it.

But hey, "infinite abyss", right?

I will admit the movies have gotten worse. But there are some that shine. (ex. Nights and Weekends, Humpday).
But i agree. Stop making the typical upper class, white 23-27 year old, complaining about relationships and jobs and life. Wise up you fools, life gets harder.

As for the mention of Garden State. Well, that one is my guilty pleasure. Plus it's the godfather of the genre (mubmlecore). So i guess thats okay.

Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the war room!

Agreed.
But do remember that this girl is the child of 2 wealthy NYC artists in Tribeca-- it's all in the connections when stuff like this gets put through.

Painfully boring movie to watch, it had a few small moments, but nothing I'd pay to see...ever.

I agree with you completely, pretentious crap like this shouldn't be noticed by anyone, much less getting into festivals. It's a glorified home video about people who aren't interesting. I'm all for character studies, but make it about something strong with real dialogue, instead of phony hipster *beep*
