Does Anyone Like This Movie?

It was ok. I was expecting to be more moved than I was and to be crying a heck of a lot more so maybe it wasn't as schmalzy as I was expecting.

The horses were better actors than the people. I was seriously impressed with some of the horse acting, but equally disappointed in some of the human acting.

Spielberg always delivers a good story. What I usually find is that I can't bear the emotional tone of his films. I surprised myself with this in that, despite the schmaltz, I loved the story of the horses which seemed emotionally authentic in a way that the surrounding story was not and I could put aside the usual 'tugging at the heart strings' to feel what it's like to see a war from another perspective - that of an animal in servitude. The best scene is where the horse bolts into 'no man's land' and gets ensnared by the wire. There are lots of good scenes before this one though.

From the previews, I was expecting more action. My eyelids got heavier and heavier as the horse got passed around. I think the development of wild horse to farm mule could have been done in much shorter time without losing effectiveness, leaving more time for action.

Yes, the title character is a horse but it's not a talking animal movie so people still need to carry the load.

I'd give it a B-.
I thought it dragged on too long.

I admit I didn't want to watch it at first but I'm so happy I did! It turned out to be such a sad yet wonderful movie!

It was dumb as hell, but I liked it. It's just another stupid family drama where you need to check your brain at the door.
