Life Lines

“Why don’t people trust their instincts? They sense something is wrong; someone is walking too close behind them… It’s hard to believe that fear of offending me is stronger than the fear of pain, but you know what? It is."

This quote really got me. I would be walking downtown with a boyfriend and he would comment on how rude I would be to certain people. For instance, a random guy asking for a cigarette. I don't smoke, first of all. And, second I am a female. I know I will get flack for this, but damn it; it's facts. As a woman, the chances of being harassed in various ways are astoundingly higher than for a man. I believe I am listening to my instincts. Or, I may just be a bitch. But, I am alive and unharmed. So there.

reply

I can relate.
My intuition has served me well throughout my life, albeit being male and exceptionally sensitive wasn't always socially acceptable.
I've had psychics tell me they could see I was psychic as well.
Trust in that God-given tool for survival.
Btw, I love The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and its sequels !

reply

That's interesting and fun. :) People often ask me if I am a witch. Even total strangers. My friends say it's my confidence and that I look like I have all the answers. The funny thing is most of the time I feel like a big nerd that is astoundingly oblivious to what the hell is going on. It's probably just the wild red hair. People like to make assumptions.

I don't believe I have seen the sequels. Man, this site is going have me turning into a hermit in order to watch all the stuff I am jotting down.

reply

Oh, you've got to see the subsequent stories to Lisbeth's life; it's a fascinating ride !
I can't remember the titles offhand but if memory serves me correctly, one is a prequel.

reply

Welp, I know what my plans are for tonight. :)

reply

You have ‘psychic powers?!?’

Wow, pick the winning lottery numbers tomorrow you busted old Mule.

reply

That line really leapt out to me as well, and it stings because of how true it is. People have gotten themselves into all sorts of situations just because they wanted to remain right, or liked, or polite.

Of course, it certainly does apply to women on a whole other level, but I think it's quite a universally honest thing too. People are more content to walk on eggshells than do what their heart and mind are telling them is the correct thing to do. Taking a step outside of your accepted box of fear or values or whatever takes a lot of summoned strength for most people and was so succinctly put in just one sentence here.

reply

I can't remember how many times I haven't listened to my instincts and it would bite me in the ass. We are being detached from them with modernity.

reply

I can get that, social norms have almost taken the place of instincts and intuition. I suppose the further we get away from our ancestor-like ways, the more detached we become to those types of evolutionary processes. Maybe, I don't know, I sound like I'm full of shit, haha!

reply

Haha, nah, I often wonder about our evolution. It is a fascinating subject. And, no worries. I feel like I sound/read like a pompous ass most of the time.

reply

" Social norms" being certain voices that admonish us to ignore and suppress ! Maybe because of outright denial or hidden agendas.
I learned when I was younger that the most successful cops and businessmen were those that trust their intuition. An epiphany that bolstered my self-confidence.

reply

I follow my intuition always.

reply

I am self-protective first. I always listen to my intuition, however, it is often females i am rude to because usually they are feeling insecure and jealous and have some ulterior motive for coming up to chat.

i I liked the original swedish version better than the american version of this film.

reply

What do you think the motives are?

reply

It is usually to make sure i am attached because their boyfriend is looking at me. But if i want him i'll get him. ;) you know the type of possessive insecure woman i speak of. I won't let those pariah's near me. I have found men in Europe to be interested but not dangerous. And no one has ever asked me for a cigarette-gross! They have offered me cigarettes though-yuk!

reply

I have watched all of them. The Swedish trilogy, the American version and I've read all the books. To me, the American version was truer to the book and had a darker vibe (which I loved).
