Why are aliens always more advanced than us??

We have a lot of these 'aliens invade earth' films with massive ships, impenetrable shields and death rays that incinerate everything in its path. Does it never occur that we could be those aliens in the future. Much like Columbus discovering America?

Any thoughts on humans being the genocidal aliens?

IF we ever become technologically advanced enough for space travel we will be the genocidal aliens. It is what is destined to happen. Logically when you advance to the point of being several leaps beyond the other creatures around you, you will eventually view the other creatures as we currently view cows or horses... we might enjoy them as pets or we might harvest them for food... Same logic applies to any alien race capable of space travel, we as humans might be viewed as pets or might be viewed as cattle... not sure what other options you might envision with an alien landing party on Earth, maybe they land and some cajuns with the munchies decide to cook'm and eat'm?

Many Native American civilizations were more 'advanced' than those found in Africa. Yet Africa was not colinised to the same extent.

As a previous poster mentioned, a large portion of the indigenous inhabitants were vulnerable to european disease.

And it was that rather than some thinly veiled bigoted assumption that they were slaughtered because of 'primitiveness', led to their decline in numbers.

I think the first clue that they're more advanced than us is they found earth before we found their planet. Ding ding ding!

I believe defence contingencies have considered an alien intelligence preparing an invasion of Earth by using a 'relativistic' weapon, for example a small block of armour plate travelling at near-light speed, which would be necessary to traverse the distance conventionally. After impact they wait a few decades for the dust to settle. Of course a comet at 17,000 mph would have a similar effect.

"Columbus discovering America" ? - must have been taught in an American school.

What if they were on a similar level to us only they had other technology like hibernation machines to keep them alive over very long periods of time.

In Defiance the aliens build massive Arks with what look like freezing tubes to keep their population alive for a 5000 year trip to Earth. No FTL and that's how they did it.

For aliens to even GET here requires a much higher level of technology than we currently possess... And it's not just FTL, it's things like battery life, computer power, artificial gravity, radiation shielding, perfect water storage and recycling...

If you want humans as aliens, go watch Avatar or that one episode of The Twilight Zone.

Witty closing remarks have been replaced by massive head trauma and severe hemorrhaging.
