I do think the purpose of flashing back to their first day together was to end the film on a hopeful note, but I believe it was only that- a flash back.
I agree that it was a flashback, and I agree that it was intended to be a "happier" ending, however I found it even more depressing than if the flashback hadn't have been there. Instead of seeing him moving on, we get a look back at what might have been, but we know wasn't.
I really didn't like the film at all. I'm not sure if it was meant to be in part a comedy - I've seen it described as a rom-com - but I didn't find any of it so, nor did I find that it had the depth to earn learning anything from tragedy.
Perhaps it worked as a book; I haven't read it, and wouldn't now. But as a film I found it maudlin, meandering, toneless and depressing.
Really disappointed by it.
