Is this show on its death bed?

I only ask because I remember from the episode of Family Guy when Cleveland returns to Quahog and Joe, Peter, and Quagmire are making fun of him for the Cleveland show being cancelled to which he uses the alibi "it got the same ratings as Bob's Burgers." Does this indicate that Fox will eventually can Bob's Burgers or did they cancel the Cleveland show because they expected more out of a Seth Macfarlane created show?

reply

It could be but I hope it sticks around! I loved tonight's episode!!

reply

No, it's not.

Two more seasons have already been ordered and FOX is nearly a season behind on holdovers, so ordering a 9th season would be a no brainer for them. 3 more years of Bob's Burgers is a virtual guarantee. And if FOX doesn't pick up the remaining holdovers, Adult Swim, Netflix, TBS or someone else will.

Re: The Cleveland Show's cancellation, that show didn't have the critical clout to pick up Emmys as Bob's Burgers did in season 5 (Can't Buy Me Math), nor a diehard online fanbase to stand behind it in the event of a cancellation. Bob's Burgers is pulling in the same ratings today as it did two years ago (the least watched episode of the show aired in season 4) and in an era of steadily dropping ratings for the network, that consistency puts the show in a positive light.

The Simpsons only pulled in 300,000 more viewers than Bob's Burgers did last week. Nothing is sticking for FOX right now. Family Guy's ratings have dropped exponentially this season and The Simpsons just aired their least watched episode ever. Keeping that in mind, realize that the show is still an asset to the network in its current state.

I know it's an unreliable source, but according to wikipedia the viewership plummeted. I think last season's season finale only drew 1.49 million viewers.

reply

The worst rating the show has ever had (in millions) is 1.52 for Ambergris in 2014.

The season 4 finale had 1.95

The season 5 finale had 2.44

The season 6 peak is 3.13, which ranked higher than Family Guy that night.

Last week had 2.05.

Yeeaaaah... it's not even close to its "death bed".

The cult following of the show is extremely strong. They just released a new cookbook "The Bob's Burgers Burger Book: Real Recipes for Joke Burgers", going to release the soundtrack of their best musical performances, and unlike any other Fox Shows, they have a Bob's Burgers Live tour around the nation that's sold out on each showing.

Plus, as mentioned before, they're already renewed for a couple seasons, back in the proper 8:30 spot (bumping both that stupidass show "Cooper Barrett's Guide To Surviving Life" to 7:30, and Bordertown to 7pm... which shows how much confidence they have in that new 'toon).

So to sum up, no. They are in the best position they've ever been in, and airing knockout episodes each week.

Why in the world do you still watch Family Guy? It hasn't been funny in a long long time.

"Each ending is merely a new beginning."

reply

I always thought it was the Family Guy team getting defensive over the attention that Bob's Burgers was getting. It felt like they were complaining about Cleveland getting cancelled, while Bob's Burgers was continually getting renewed despite the similar ratings. Also, Bob's was getting a lot more love from the internet at the time.

reply

Family Guy has also given BB grief for its animation style as well, which is funny coming from one of the stiffest, laziest-directed shows on television.

The jealously is cute.

reply

Right? Family Guy was a great show, but it really did get lazy and too dependent on the cutaway jokes. The whole esoteric/meta referencing gets to become too much. It's to the point that after the first few seasons, I only remember the jokes and cutaways, but can't tell you what episode any of those jokes/scenes came from. When they do get around to doing a character driven episode, there's nothing there, since the characters are so inconsistent throughout it's run, you don't care about them.

And BB's animation style is so much more kinetic, has so much more energy than FG; I don't see how they can criticize.

reply

In The Simpsons-Family Guy crossover episode, Bob briefly appears in it with Peter saying "we had to include him because the ratings aren't doing so well" or something similar to that. Thus, another reason why I thought BB wasn't doing so well

reply

Again, I feel it's more about the Family Guy team taking shots at Bob's Burgers than anyone at FOX worrying about Bob's. BB has already been renewed for next season, while they're still waiting to hear the same for Family Guy (it will, but it's a little telling that BB got their reorder first).

According to Variety, Family Guy has indeed been renewed for the 2016-2017 season.

It's telling that they're only renewing one season at a time for FG. Simpsons and Bob's Burgers both received multi-year extensions last time. I would be shocked if FG gets cancelled any time soon, but I'm not surprised they're being tentative with it after a rough season. They're consistently pulling in 2.5-3.5 mil a night, whereas the "deathbed" Bob's Burgers is doing 2.0-3.0 with more legs and acclaim.

The Simpsons has hit a rough patch since mid-January, doing similar numbers to Family Guy, but at least it's still capable of the odd 6-8 million night. Family Guy has a very low ceiling these days.

Not really, simply because Family Guy has never been renewed for multiple seasons so the fact it wasn't renewed for 2 seasons when Bob's & The Simpsons were isn't unusual at all.

What is telling is that this is going to be the first season (according to Deadline.com's season rankings) after, if I recall correctly, seven seasons that Family Guy won't be the most watched & highest rated of FOX's Sunday shows. The Simpsons has bypassed FG and with only a few more episodes of both shows left this season, is averaging 4.298 million viewers & 1.87 demo score to FG's average of 3.181 million viewers & 1.52 demo score.

I agree, there's no reason to believe FOX will pull Family Guy's plug anytime soon, I still think Seth will most likely end the show before FOX cancels it, but it's interesting that The Simpsons has regained it's top spot on Sunday night after so many years.
On a side note, I'm not sure where Variety has gotten their information about FG's renewal for the 2016-2017 season cause I can't find official confirmation anywhere else. tvseriesfinale.com doesn't have it listed as renewed but tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com for example is quite certain it's returning. I guess people are just assuming it's returning unless FOX says otherwise.

reply

That's surprising re: renewals. I didn't know that. As you said, FG has been a consistently high performer for the better part of a decade. Maybe Seth hasn't wanted to lock himself down; God knows he has enough other projects going on.

I haven't been watching, but I've heard positive-ish things about this season despite the low ratings.

reply

Seth said in an interview that he's basically ready to end FG, but is sticking around for as long as the demand to keep going is there.

Peter's line after seeing Bob is ...
We gotta carry him cause he can't fly on his own.
We let that other guy try & look what happened.
[Cleveland going down in flames]

I think it was more of a dig against The Cleveland Show's failing and a reason to do a Cleveland "No,no,no!" gag rather than a comment on Bob's Burgers' performance.
Besides, the comment wasn't really accurate.
The Simpsons & Family Guy haven't been carrying Bob's Burgers since March 2014 really, when it moved to 7pm then 9:30 & then 7:30pm. It managed to do fine when it wasn't between the two top rated shows on FOX's Sunday night.

Good for the FG team in regards to the renewal; I was referencing an article from a week or two ago. Haven't been much of a fan of the show for a few years, but it still would feel weird not having it there, and way better than having that Cooper Barrett mess in its place.

I don't know...sounds like a dig at Bob. Two references to Bob's Burgers by Family Guy, two jokes about how they're doing as bad as Family Guy's cancelled spinoff...

reply

It does sound like that personality type that takes digs at someone who is getting attention they feel is rightly theirs. On a rare time I did watch some FG recently, Peter did some throwaway line about ugliness, cutting away to a shot of Bob. This coming from Peter Griffin. I'll assume it was supposed to be ironic.

reply

Cancelling this brilliant show would be a crime and a terrible loss for quality humor and great writing. I can not imagine this show is doing bad in any way.

reply

No, Seth MacFarlane just likes to be a bully. Bob's Burgers was renewed through season 8.

reply

I hope not, I LOVE this show. It is so heartwarming.

reply

It's about 5 years late for that.
