Clearly this is popular, and I enjoy the genres separately. But I can't be horrified and enjoy laughing at the same time. I am unable to mix extreme violence with humor. I must be wired funny... I also don't get toilet humor.
Typically I don't search out comedy horrors, but there are a few that were a blast. I thought Tucker and Dale vs Evil was a riot, for instance..Shaun of the Dead was good, cabin in the woods was OK.. that's about all I care for.
I don't consider Zombieland a horror at all, however, aside from zombies being in it. There are zero scares.
YOU NAMED 3 PRETTY AWESOME ONES...DID YOU SEE SLITHER,REVENGE OF THE LIVING DEAD,RE-ANIMATOR,FRIGHT NIGHT ARACHNIPHOBIA,AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON,GREMLINS,TOXIC AVENGER,TREMORS,DEAD ALIVE,CEMETARY MAN,BUBBAHO TEP,FIDO,SEVERANCE,FEAST,FREAKS OF NATURE,KRAMPUS,BETTER WATCH OUT ,HAPPY DEATH DAY OR EVIL DEAD/ARMY OF DARKNESS?
I forgot about American Werewolf.. I love that movie.
I've actually seen a few others on there. Gremlins, Re-Animator Toxic Avenger, Fright Night, Arachnophobia, Better Watch Out and Happy Death Day and Krampus.. I guess my definition for horror-comedy was too narrow.
I've seen all the Evil Dead movies..but they are just not my thing.
Idle Hands was also pretty great.. just remembered that one.
Horror comedy is a great mix. I'm not a fan of straight up comedy movies. I prefer my comedy mixed with other genres. I have a fondness for horror/comedy/musical mix.
The comedy has to be done right and you usually need to have watched the movie the comedy is parodying but it can be done well. A little out of the way but an amazing movie for classic horror fans is a comedy called Transylvania 6-5000, where journalists are sent to transylvania to search for a werewolf (not a vampire). It makes fun of all the classic horror tropes brilliantly but unfortunatelly flew entirely under the radar when it originally released in 1985.
There are plenty of original horrors with comedy elements that dont parody anything. Return of the Living Dead had zombies, mentions Night of the Living Dead in the film as a joke, world building due to the barrels being filled with NOTLD zombies but it didn't parody NOTLD. It was dark humour, layered with many small jokes you only see after many viewings (Ernie being a Nazi fanboy) and most importantly the players and the film took the threat seriously.
Horror comedy is pretty well known as a good mix of genres. You should really watch more movies to get why it goes well together and why there are so many successful attempt. As well as failed attempts.
The same as you. I don't remembering me laughing at the violence and gore parts, not a fan of horror-comedy movies, when I get older and older extreme violence makes me more uncomfortable. Never understand why many teenager find it funny. I watched this movie because I am like Emma Stone and this's the only non-animated movies of her I didn't watch. I laugh at some of the jokes between the action sequences. It's help that the bad guys are zombies and not human.
The one joke that didn't work for me was the joke of Madison not being dead after all. I know it's meant to be a horror comedy, but after showing her dying, the idiotic explanation of why she was still alive was a bridge too far for me. it was one instance where comedy didn't mix with the horror story.
