Just finished the first episode. *MILD SPOILERS*

I don't know..

It feels like it should be more nostalgic than it is. Everything looks the same, and it even look as if it could have been shot alongside That 70's Show in late 90's/early 2000's.

The daughter is all over the place and seems unlikable. She starts off being this weird, awkward nerdy kid when she first meets her new neighbor. Within the span of one afternoon, she then ends up blackmailing a store owner and straight up walking into the house, in front of her parents and grandparents, with a cup of beer and proceeds to slam it on the ground in front of them and storms of.

As a side note, I was raised in the 90's, and if I ever did that, it would have been the end of my fucking life. They just let her walk off and then give her what she wants which kind of bothered me.

All of that about the daughter is just an aside though. Overall, I found the humor to be kinda simple and obvious, but I know pilots aren't always the best indicator of a show's quality.

Has anyone else moved forward with it, and if so, what are your thoughts?

Also, guys and gals, please for once spare the woke/non-woke/libtard/magat/homophobic/whatever other sociopolitical crap people are always on about on these boards.

I see some thread titles here already going that direction. I grew up in Minnesota in the 90's and this is similar enough to what my friend group looked like at that age. I don't care about diversity as long as the show itself isn't loaded with preachy messaging. I didn't notice any of that in the first episode though, so I'm holding out hope.

That doesn't sound like the pilot episode. The pilot episode is where the granddaughter convinces her parents to let her stay with her grandparents in Point Place for the summer after she meets a new groups of friends.

reply

Yes. That is the pilot episode. Unless I was inhaling carbon monoxide and my memory is off.

She meets her neighbor and her new friends. The 2 dopes tell everyone about the keg they were given at the liquor store. Then she goes to get the tap and threatens to call the police on on the clerk for selling to a minor if she doesn't sell them the tap.

Then they go hang out at the water tower and she and her new BFF talk about her staying in Point Place. That's when she goes home, still with the beer in hand, and slams it on the floor when Eric says she can't stay for the summer.

reply

Ok. Maybe I was the one inhaling carbon monoxide. Yes, you are right! But it wasn't over the span of one afternoon. Or maybe it was one afternoon. Or maybe I just dreamt all of this.

Anyway, I liked when Kelso and Jackie dropped by!

reply

You could be right in that it wasn't one afternoon. I can't say I was exactly laser-focused on the show. I was firing off a few texts here and there and dinking around with other stuff.

Kelso and Jackie were definitely my favorite cameos. Love that Kitty still lights up when she sees him all these years later.

reply

The show is painfully not funny.

reply

I got a few chuckles out of the first episode, mostly from the cameos.

Sometimes it takes a show a couple episodes to find it's groove, so I figured I'd see if anyone has moved further along with it yet. I still haven't seen anything past the first one.

reply

I tortured myself with the first six episodes.

reply

Well damn.

I have such nostalgia for That 70's Show that I'll probably still force myself with a few more, hesitantly. Definitely not seeing a lot of praise for it.

I pretty much saw all the jokes coming in the first episode, like Red teasing Eric about being a dad, Kitty being overjoyed with having kids around to dote on again.. Figured this episode to get all that out of the way and maybe pick up after that.

Seems like they can fuck up any winning formula now though. Just throw some likable kids together trying to stave off the boredom of small town adolescence. The shit should practically write itself if you just write decent characters to work with.
