So, what exactly was Verna

At first, I thought she was the devil, but she mentioned somewhere that she didn't want souls. I also assumed she was Death/The Grim Reaper, but I thought that entity only came when it was time to "go". Verna could affect outcomes, and change lives. I really don't know what she was. She displayed sympathy on more than one occasion. I guess she was only doing her job as needed.

A few things I wasn't clear on:
- I'm not buying that Fredrick could bring home a patient that has like 80th degree burns, even considering who he is. And no one follows up, so he's able to keep a patient like that in complete isolation?
- The game Verna played with Victorine. I didn't get how her playing a patient drove Victorine to commit suicide. It seems Vice relationship with Alessandra was headed that way without intervention from Verna.
-Was Gris's body ever found?

This was pretty good. It got better as it went on.

She didn’t drive her to suicide, she was inhabiting her body and forced her to do it. Remember, she was even speaking as Verna?

No, the body was still there in the wall. That’s why Roderick kept going down there and hearing the chains rattling.

As the other posters wrote the Raven... but then you could ask what does the Raven represent... I do think Verna is some version of the devil, a demon or death... call it what you like... Just because she doesn't want their souls I don't think you can conclude she is not the devil... but she does show compassion towards Lenore which I would assume would be a strange trait for the devil or a demon... But then again she also has the power to give The Usher's power and money in real life in exchange for the Usher bloodline... which is kind of a devilish thing to do... But maybe the Devil takes playsure in killing broken/corrupt people and therefore Lenore is just unfortunate collateral damage... which is why Verna gets no joy in her death...
