Missed Opportunities (Spoilers)

There were at least a handful of missed opportunities that could have made this a better movie.

Like when Peter dropped the firewood, moved the light away from it, then moved it back--instead of a bunch of small twigs, they should have come back to one of the stick figures.

Also, they made a huge deal about the GPS in the cameras, in the drone, and so many other times--but they didn't do anything with it. They could have shown the GPS camera right next to the others, but like it was in another dimension...or something. Anything. You set it up--use it.

How about the injured foot? Nothing.

The drone? Nothing.

The camera set in the tree? Nothing. At least make something move in the bushes behind them as they're looking away.

Then there's the story about the tree, the hanging, and the rocks being tied to the body. They put the black girl up in the tree and completely set it up...then did nothing with it beyond making her fall.

What else?

I was so excited for what they might do with the dronecam... I was like "Wow, that's so creative and something I haven't seen done before!"... and then they do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING with it. At least Paranormal Activity 4 used the Kinect (also new and creative) and there was SOME payoff with it..

I also wish that Blair Witch had used silence more often than noise... one of my favorite things about the PA movies is how they have you look at a seemingly empty space in complete silence, and for like a minute, trying to predict what's going to happen and from where.. THAT IS SUSPENSE! Love that.

was to establish that they had been teleported back in time or into another dimension. When the drone goes up they observe that all the roads and streams that are supposed to be there are NOT THERE, They have simply disappeared, and there is NOTHING visible but endless woodlands.

in other words, the witch has teleported them into an alternate dimension. that is pretty damn terrifying to me.

Your right. If they just fleshed out this and some other ideas more it would of really drove in the sense of dread. I honestly didnt think about time travel at all until i read about it here. I just thought they were lost and the witch was really messing with there heads.

Ughh I hate PA4 with a passion, feel it's the worst entry to the series by far. That said, I gotta give it to you on the kinect thing vs. BW's non-use of the dronecam. This movie was chocked full of missed opportunity, and I love Adam Wingard and Simon Barett, so I wonder what heck happened with this movie..

reply

Ha yeah I agree, PA4 turned me off to the series. PA 1 and 2 were my favorites, and 3 had some truly memorable and horrifying scenes so I give it credit for that. But speaking of novel camera uses, I'm currently watching another found footage movie called JeruZalem. The acting is poor and I'm only about 30mins in so I can't say if the film will be worth it or not, but the POV is basically through Google Glass glasses... it's unique in the least. Hopefully they'll do something fantastic with it before the credits roll.

These are great points.

At some point in the film I thought there would be a scene where from the drone they would see the house, or a fire in the distance, or movement of the trees of something big coming toward them. This never happened.

I actually forgot about the camera attached to the tree at the campsite, but yeah they set that up and the film made a point to go back to it a few times in a short space of time...as if something was about to pop up in the background...but nothing.

They could have shown footgae from that camera while they were sleeping that showed a figure outside the tent or something just to build foreboding but nothing.

With regard to the camera on the tree, do you think the director thought that setting it up and *not* showing anything with it was suspenseful or made things tense? That's the only reason I can think it wasn't used for anything--that we kept waiting for something to happen, only to be let down.

It's a possibility, but personally I think the director hinting at something then doing nothing is infinitely less interesting than using the opportunity to really show the audience something special using that set-up.

reply

Oh yeah. Total agreement here.

I guess I'm just trying to understand what the thought was behind all the bad decisions.

I agree I wish they did more with the drone. They could have seen a figure in the woods. Or maybe even in the trees. Maybe the "Heather" figure could have been seen for a split second in the trees. And they could of had the witch messing with them making it seem like they were getting to their cars on the drone only to end up back to their campsite.

Also I wish they had them hear Heather, Josh and Mike screaming. They could have used the audio from the first movie when Josh is screaming and Heather and Mike are calling out to him. That would have been in line with the original with them hearing the kids outside their tent. It could have lead up to them being attacked.

I also wish Mary Brown was mentioned. She is one of the most memorable parts of the original and it would have been nice if Lane or Talia mentioned her.

"Notice how I ride side saddle, it proves I'm a lady of quality." Witch Hazel

reply

Yeah Mary Brown was very creepy, they definitely allude to her possible involvement in the first film by showing her gate that is made out sticks and rope almost in the same shape as the stick figures so it would of been a nice touch.

reply

I think a very simple and effective use of the drone would have been to show a huge impending storm coming towards them. It would cement the idea that things are about to take a turn for the worse, and would have set up the rain that features in the film anyway.

Brilliant observations! They had so many wasted opportunities here!
When Peter took the bandage off of Ashley's foot, I wondered if the wound would look like the symbol. Then when Ashley rolled her pants up, I thought the same thing.
Peter being alone in the woods at night should have been so much scarier. Instead it's like a tree attacked him. I thought it'd be freaky if perhaps, when he looked down to pick up the wood pile, his camera would flash the Witch for a moment, something we see but he missed.
It was too much to hope we'd get to see the web cam's results while they slept, as that would reveal the magic of the witch. But still, it'd be cool if we got to see a little something there.
Excellent points!

My friend came up with a good idea after we saw this. She thought it would have been cool if Ashley slowly started becoming the witch. It kind of seemed like the movie was going that way with her wound and everything but instead they just killed her off. So much wasted potential.

Something I thought should have been absolutely necessary that the movie did not include was interviewing James about his sister. My main problem with the movie was that James and Lisa were not very well-defined characters, but they're the ones we're stuck with the longest, as all of the interesting characters are killed off first. James's only defining trait is that he is Heather's brother. I think the movie could have played on that in an interesting way by interviewing him about his sister. That way we get a sense of what their relationship was and why he feels the need to go looking for her (he was just 4 at the time she disappeared, so it's not like he knew her well) and it also gives more of a sense of his character through how he describes his feelings about her.

Hmmm...since the witch plays with time, I wonder if they could have pulled off Ashley becoming the witch and showing her in an old sketch that looked like the original woman who became the witch. Kinda like Jack Torrence at the end of The Shining meets the Terminator's time paradox loop.
