OTish - Best Film In a Horror Series

Of the following Horror series with at least three or more movies, which is your single favorite entry in each? Just cut and paste the list and replace with your choices and feel free to add any other series I forgot. Thought this would be fun to do with this new Blair Witch movie out now and also with it being Halloween season.

Friday the 13th 6 was the perfect Friday the 13th film. Nightmare on Elm Street 3 was better than the original.

Evil Dead 2 is a given but I'm not sure that counts.

reply

The Exorcist films with the original being far and away the best.

Forgot none other than Blair Witch for this. Seen the first and the recent one and find both meh. Not seen Book Of Shadows, yet.

Well, I'll only answer for franchises for which I've seen at least 2 films from:

Friday The 13th - Part 3, the one where Jason gets his signature mask, as well as the handstand kill.

Halloween - Original. Hands down a true cinematic classic , and one of the most important horror films of all time.

A Nightmare On Elm Street - Part 3, best kills and one liners in the franchise. This is the one that really established Freddy's character.

Saw - Original, stopped watching after the third one. Part 2 and 3 were just awful.

Scream - Original, I have a special spot in my heart for Scream, while it also did revive horror in the mainstream at the time, this was one of the films that got 10 year old me into horror.

Evil Dead - I really love the entire trilogy, but I have to go with Evil Dead 2. ED2 is just so creative and fun, a true work of art.

Alien - For horror, I pick Alien. As much as I love Aliens, it much more of an action film.

Predator - Original, but like Aliens, all of the Predator films are action.

Child's Play - Original, but with an honourable mention to the Toy Factory scene in part 2.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Original, a horror masterpiece.

Final Destination - Original, sequels had some interesting kills, but that's all they had.

Puppet Master - I have seen 1 through 4 of this series and I barely remember anything about them. I'm not even going to pick one.

Romero's Living Dead - Dawn of the Dead. This is a great trilogy, the quailty ranges from great, to horror classic.

Jaws - Original, this is a rare case where I liked the film more than the book it was based on.

Cube - Original, maybe one of the most optimal uses of a single set in film.

Tremors - Original, no conest.

Leprechaun - Original, not that any of these are that great.

Blade - Blade 2, I'm a Guillermo del Toro fan.

Resident Evil - None of these movies are good

My additions:

Blair Witch franchise - Original, still the best found footage film ever made.

Critters - Oddly enough, I have seen all but the original film. For now I'll pick part 3, I think it was Leonardo Dicaprio's first film role.

Children of the Corn - Original, and even then it's an average film at best.

Rec / Quarantine - Original Rec, my personal pick for next best found footage after TBWP.

I think Aliens and the Predator flms count as Horror. They're an Action/Horror/Sci-Fi hybrid.

reply

I wont disagree that they're an amalgamation of genres, as are many other films on this list (there's a strong argument for Evil Dead 2 being a straight up comedy), I just personally feel that those films in particular lean far more into the action genre.

While the concepts, and creatures are scary, I don't feel that the predator films (or specifically Aliens in that franchise) try to use those elements to create a sense of horror. In "Predator", our victims are high skilled, trained, and ultra masculine commandos armed to the teeth, while in Aliens we're also following trained, skilled, and armed space marines. It's harder to feel scared when this is the context of your hero, as opposed to Jamie Lee Curtis in "Halloween" who is just a teenage babysitter being chased by an evil entity with no adult help.

reply

I think Aliens still had that eerie feeling the original did of a creature stalking a team of people and killing them off one by one and this time it was multiple aliens and even with the firepower the Marines were still largely outnumbered and vulnerable. Predator in some ways is like a variant of a slasher movie when you think about it, with the killer picking off prey one by one, only instead of teens it's battle-hardened commandos. I guess it's just personal perception.

The trailer for the new Underworld reminds me of that series. Only seen the original and parts of the second.

Having gone through the Blade series recently I'd probably say I enjoyed Blade II a tad more than the original though both are pretty much on par for me. But yeah, I'd pick Blade II as my favorite.
