Why wasn't the crew carrying guns and have things changed?

At the time the movie takes place was the crew allowed to carry guns? Has the crew been asked why they didn't if they were obviously aware of some threat (like you seen when they check the radar, etc), they knew pirates could be a possibility...

Have things changed since the movie was released? Do these type of ships carry guns now... training?

they managed to get pistols from somewhere later on due to a plot hole.

Still unchanged. No guns onboard. Flair pistols only.

Merchant ships should be authorized to carry and trained to use not only small arms (rifles, pistols), but something like mounted .50 caliber machine guns, to defend themselves.
