I took another look at "Fall" last night. What actually struck me this time around is Hunter endlessly pushing Becky into making the climb.
It reminded me of being in High School - being pushed to smoke the wacky weed.
You can tell Becky doesn't want to, yet Hunter keeps pushing. Becky, obviously being the weaker of the two, caves in.
Then it turns out, Hunter had been sleeping with Becky's man. Hahah, what a surprise, LOL. Well, I suppose she at least had the courtesy to cut it out once Becky married him.
ANd the implausible circumstances - would anyone really have continued scaling the tower? I can see wanting to do it - but it's clearly established, several times in fact, the tower is falling apart. Why would anyone in their right mind continue to climb it? IN fact, I don't think anyone would. I can see a lot of people wanting to attempt it, looking at it as a huge challenge. But they'd cut out once they realized their life was in danger.
And lastly, it could have used more of an explanation as to how Becky was saved. One minute she's up there, the next she is safely rescued. It would have been nice to see how she was rescued.
These shortcomings aside, "Fall" was all right. It's worth a look.
I watch Fall every time I happen upon it. I relate to Hunter to the point of folly; and numerous scars, MRIs, casts, and physio-rehab stints. Being an adrenaline addict is a very real condition. One wants to share the high (pun intended) with others. Hunter feels she is giving Becky a gift, unable to grasp the notion that Becky is only reluctantly trying to be a 'good sport.'
I do not condone nor respect Hunter betraying Becky with her boyfriend.
When I do solo climbs and reach a spot on the mountainside that is too steep for a normal person to continue, I remove my backpack and hurl it up to the next ledge, forcing myself to follow. When I go to parks where there is a postbox to leave your name, time of entry, and who to call, I add, "Should this adventure prove fatal, please, please do not allow one search and rescue person to risk their life for my bad decision."
"Why would anyone in their right mind..." Hunter was not of 'right mind' and Becky as the beta female allowed herself to be swayed.
Only three times have I dragged a friend along, once hopping a train boxcar, trespassing around a barbwire fence to walk across the LA Wash on a wide-ish pipe above 40 feet of concrete, and a Grand Canyon rim-to-rim in one day. The first two were with girlfriends, the canyon with a guy I was dating. No one was injured but no one enjoyed themself, save for me.
As for not seeing Becky's rescue, that was likely a money issue. Adding helicopters, stunt performers, more aerial camera work was likely not in their budget.

Agreed, it's all on Hunter. She's ultra aggressive, pseudo masculine. SHe probably didn't even consider how foolish it was to continue the climb up that rickety tower. Becky, yep the Beta, she may even be trying to please Hunter by continuing. The only question with her is she weak because of the tragedy of the year before, or is she just weak, period.

Oh yes, of course. WHomever produced it didn't want to spend the money on it. Unfortunately though, it is a missing piece.

Hahah, well, good luck to you. I hope you don't end up like Hunter did.
You know, taking a moment to think about it. Becky was most likely weak, period. I mean think about it. I used the marijuana analogy. Yes, in High School, I smoked it a few times entirely due to peer pressure. Once reaching my 20s- I passed on it probably at least 50 times. Becky and Hunter, one believes, are in their 20s. By that time, when you are sensing - hey I don't want to do this - you should have the strength to say - NO!
"You know, taking a moment to think about it. Becky was most likely weak" I think that Becky was also a 'pleaser.' Yes, she was wrong-headed to go along, but in the end, she was the survivor. I liked the not so subtle preview of "something wicked this way comes" scene of the buzzards enjoying their dying supper.
Many of Hunter's adventures had probably been fun for Becky, so she was ripe for being lured into this impossible stunt.
Thank you for not judging me. (at least publicly)
Edit: Just noticed you already mentioned 'pleaser.'
Whatever turns you on turns you on. It's your life. Live it as you please.
No judgements at all.
Ok, nice conversation, thank you. We're on the same page.
Actually though, one could make the argument you are incorrect about Becky's survival.
Yes, true, she does survive - but this is only because Hunter, in her hyper aggressiveness, insisted on getting the bag. Becky survived by default. She eventually does get it going - by the end Becky is just as aggressive as Hunter.

They could probably have left off the first fifteen minutes and made it a better movie. They wouldn't have even needed to hire actors to play the husband and father.

If this is to me, that quote was by JacobTodd. I did not miss that 'missing piece' and it does not detract from my entertainment.
Hiring those unknown actors cost them donuts and bagels on the Kraft Service table compared to the price of a helicopter, permits for it, several added stunt performers, and a cameraman well practiced in aerial photography. It is a specialty like steady cam.
I am happy to let my imagination fill in that missed piece ... and the roadkill that Hunter would have looked like. ;D
