Big plot hole no one is talking.[Spoilers]

There is no way there would not have had a mobile signal up there. They said the radio tower was disused and there was just the red light there to warn aircraft. It was in a bad state of disrepair so probably scheduled for demolition at any point.

Radio waves travel best when there is nothing blocking the signal. They were at the best place to have a signal! The whole thing about there being a signal at the bottom of the tower, and clearly a signal at the diner/hotel would mean they had a signal there. There is no reason why they wouldn't have done. But I guess movie has to movie. They did say about there being interference. Well, clearly there wasn't as the drone wouldn't have worked either.

Also iPhone batteries do not last that long!

It's true, unless there was no signal at all in that whole area, they definitely should have had a signal.

That's not how cell phone signals work. A higher altitude doesn't mean anything on its own. There has to be a cell tower nearby... if there isn't, a higher elevation doesn't help you at all.

When it does help, that is only because you are avoiding hills, mountains or other things that block your phone from having a line-of-sight to a nearby cell tower.

They are out in the middle of nowhere with nothing around. They won't have a magical cell signal just because of the altitude alone.

This is a common misconception by people who are in very remote areas... they are miles from a cell tower, and they climb higher, which only puts them at risk of getting hurt. Since there is no cell tower, there still won't be a signal no matter how high you climb.

They are much higher than any cell tower... in a city, they are up to 80 feet... on the outskirts of a town, along highways, etc... they are only up to 150 feet... and in rural areas, they are only up to 300 feet. This tower the climbers are on is supposedly 2000 feet high.

Also, your phone connects to cell towers... not to satellites... as some people seem to think.
