Enjoyable But…

…would be more enjoyable if not taken SO over the top. After a while it gets childish and you kinda want it to be over. I loved the first John Wick for what it was but halfway thru the 2nd one I was done. They’ll probably make sequels of this if it does well.

reply

I don't even consider it enjoyable. (Spoilers ahead).

Statham has become such a one-note cliche it's not even fun anymore. He mumbles through a script of very short and dumb sentences....and does these ridiculous, choreographed, fake martial arts moves.....mowing through 10 or more trained, armed men with just his bare hands, rarely even sustaining a blow himself.....and in a suit....and not even getting exhausted ir even tired. He also is able to somehow pivot and improvise in any situation, as if he has studied the air ducts, elevator shafts and underground sewer systems of any building for months. There's fun action (think Predator)....and then there's ridiculous and dumb and cartoonish, (at the levels of the Fast/Furious movies).

Also, the very premise of this movie is beyond stupid. Because he's a "Beekeeper", he wants to hunt down the President....and murder her (even though she's innocent of wrongdoing) because her SON is a currupt a-hole??? And he feels THIS will right the balance of the "hive"???

He kills an enormous amount of innocents (including members of our special forces) simply for doing their jobs....and we're supposed to root for this monosyllabic dick???

After about 45 minutes, I was looking forward to the movie ending. Full stop.

The one thing I want to address here is Statham and his martial arts. These days he seems to do nothing more than Bourne-esque quick-cut fighting where he mostly just uses his hands, whereas in the old days--for instance, in The Transporter--he would kick a lot and in general employ a much wider arsenal of moves. I don't know if he's just old now and can't do a lot of what he used to do or if it's how he's being directed, but I miss the way he used to fight in movies.

reply

I think Statham's martial arts skill is almost completely fabricated and a result of carefully crafted choreography. Sure, he has done a little training as an adult...(because it helps give him some cred as an action star). But in reality, his moves are choreographed and edited almost as much as Jackie Chan.

These days....it seems like EVERYONE in a movie or TV cop show (especially 110 lb women) are absolute EXPERTS in martial arts, and can throw 10 trained pros around like ragdolls. The concept (of martial arts giving someone a slight edge in a hand-to-hand confrontation)....has been blown up, exaggerated and done to death soooo much, it has lost all appeal. It has become silly and ridiculous. When Queen Latifah is throwing special forces soldiers around without even sustaining one blow herself.....well, it's beyond patronizing....it's beyond pandering. It's.....SMH.

reply

Well obviously the action is choreographed, being that this is the movie business, but if you go back and watch The Transporter you can tell that he has (or at least had) genuine martial arts skills. He did some amazing stuff in that film.

One of the best parts of these message boards is reading all the truly stupid people with their truly stupid takes on a wide range of easily-checked topics.

Short version: You're wrong:

Long version: You're wrong; it's hilarious that (as usual) those who babble the loudest know the least.

Go sit down somewhere.

reply

I think it's you that needs to sit down.
You're obviously very worked up. Try to take a deep breath.
Statham trains in martial arts...the way Stallone trained in boxing.
(i.e. A real boxer would drop him almost immediately).

If you believe what you see on screen from JS is real.........who cares?

reply

I'm calm. Laughing at you doesn't take much energy; my breathing is fine.

You can keep repeating stupidity, or you can use that "google" thing and learn why you're an idiot. Shrug. I've given you a link as a head start; use it or continue to embarrass yourself. Rest assured, the world will keep spinning either way.

Exactly. Even that article someone on this thread quoted as "proof" notes that the amount of training he's had is entirely self-reported

The Beekeeper thing was weird to me for the simple reason...we're humans, not bees. Adopting some bee hive mentality is a bit of a stretch!

reply

It's fine for a January action flick. My wife and I were chuckling at the bee puns, the silly action, and the settings. This movie is schlock and that's fun.

reply

This movie is pretty good.

By the way: the first John Wick is by far the worst of the series. John Wick 2 and further sequels are 1000000 times better than the mediocre first movie.

reply

I agree with you on the Beekeeper but fully disagree with the John Wick sequels. I find the sequels to be tedious and unnecessary.

Oh well. We agree on Beekeeper. It's fun action. Nothing more needed.

reply

How can you find the sequels tedious when the first John Wick is the only tedious movie from that series?

The movie is just meh. The sequels absolutely destroy it.

reply

I felt the sequels were poorly contrived excuses for overlong action sequences.

Plus, the world building was laughable. Once he found out he was kicked out of the super secret underground assassin club....

It's revealed that EVERYONE IN THE WORLD was a part of this super secret underground assassin club. Sorry but aside from the bad acting from the second movie and the bad story of #3, the 4th became overlong. Especially by the 20th stair tumble before the overly dramatic duel.

Sorry, but it was tedious.

reply

The first movie was a borefest and nothing remarkable at all.

John Wick 2 made the series relevant and abslutely awesome and unique. The actiomn is top-notch. The story is good for what it is and it's enough to make everything an exciting follow up.

The story of the first movie was stupid, boring and the action was just meh, it was only goodish in the last part.

Sorry but only the first movie is tedious.

reply

John Wick 4 was boring! Endless fights with stupid people. First film an third are the best.

reply

John Wick 4 was amazing and 100000 times better than the first movie.

reply

PART ONE IS BEST...BY FAR...THREE IS ALSO QUITE GOOD...TWO AND FOUR ARE GOOD BUT NOT TO THE LEVEL OF THREE OR ONE.

reply

PART ONE IS THE WORST BY FAR!

THE REST OF THE MOVIES ARE MILES BETTER!

reply

"if not taken SO over the top.".... that's what makes it good lol. It's an action movie, not a documentary.

reply

The scene where he disarms 12 SWAT guys in an 8 foot radius and none of them takes a shot at him was where I cringed. I think these movies can be made and still get their point across without bordering on comical lunacy. Bourne and Shooter did this very well.

reply

It was ridiculous but still a fun scene!
