Very risky to keep Negan alive. Maggie was right. Rick was a fool.
His followers could've assembled and broke him out of the jail. Or he could escape. Either way, his freedom risks the lives of everyone.
Despite the jail cell door not locking properly, how could they not have a guard on him 24/7. I know it has been years, but that should be a priority, along with the regular lookouts.

shareTrue. Not ignore, but discount it as being foolish because it wouldn't be worth endangering Judith and Michonne. That could've been his rationalization. Protect the family he has left.
Rick made other bone-headed decisions in the past. Shane was right about his being too soft.

In the comic Negan's cell was left open, but he stayed to build trust.
It might be different without Rick, because during that time, Rick was the one person in the world he was trying to impress by doing stuff like that. But it could still work for Gabriel to be that person in the show. They've already had similar conversations about trust.
shareI agree. One might argue that while the Sanctuary was still an intact community, keeping Negan alive served some purpose. But once the Sanctuary collapsed (during that 6 year time jump), then Negan should have been killed.
