In the trailer, she says something about people not finding her attractive. I think that line worked better with Streisand in the role.
Yeah its always funny in movies where the actress is pretty but the character has low self esteem and says shes been called unattractive. They did the same thing in the True Grit remake with Hailee Steinfeld, she was constantly called ugly in that movie despite being very pretty.
Again like in the original A Star Is Born how Streisand was fitting to be called unattractive, Kim Darby in the original True Grit wasn't very pretty so it worked with her character, but it didn't work when they cast a pretty girl to play the role in the remake. They should probably change some of the dialogue in cases like this.
I agree that Lady Gaga looks better without all the gaga embellishment but she's also not Hollywood's cardboard version of pretty or beautiful so I find it believable that she'd be told she'd never make it because of her looks. Looks seem to override talent many times as far as I can see. I also wonder if some of that isn't why she resorted to her image in the first place.
I really do wish she'd ditch the platinum hair and pasty overdone make up. It makes her look odd. Maybe she'll pull a David Bowie and start being comfortable being herself now that she's gotten attention doing so.
I also think you're kind of wrong about Barbra Streisand. She does have oddball features and a big nose but she also has luminous skin and beautiful eyes and does look nice in close ups. But I thought Streisand was wrong for the part because her style and the way she dressed felt antiquated even for the mid 70's and the way her character rose to fame.
Hollyweird's version of beauty is anorexic skeleton trannies.....wtf do they know about "beauty" lol?

It's now like they accept anorexia or obesity as a standard but seldom the more healthy and attractive in between those extremes.

She was surprisingly beautiful in this, I've never found her attractive but she won me over in this movie.
