Faithless to the source material

SOOOO sick of adaptations of books that I loved but which completely change key aspects of the main characters. Has been many years since I read all the Hillerman novels, but even after all that time, I recognize the character of Jim Chee is NOTHING like in the books (and was badly mis-cast as well). Not only that but completely eliminates pretty much all of the internal conflicts that he struggles with and which both propel the narrative and relate aspects of Dine' culture. In the books he was NOT an FBI agent and was struggling with whether to become one and he was studying to become a medicine man not disrespectful of Navajo religion and traditions as in the series. And WHERE TF did the plot come from??? Certainly not any of the books *I* read. Was really looking forward to this series; what a disappointment. This seems more like a bad re-make of Thunderheart but with the names of Hillerman's characters.

i haven't read any of the novels. i might watch it anyway.

Well, I never read the books so I'm enjoying the show quite a bit.

I agree! It's also highly rated on IMDb: 8.0.

Go back to the 1991 film The Dark Wind, starring Lou Diamond Phillips. It's a much more faithful adaptation of the novel & really deserves to be better known. The filmmakers did their best to respect the original story & present it as accurately as possible.

I think I will check that out. Thanks.

My pleasure! I will never understand why some people believe they should take a quality story & "improve" it by changing it completely to suit their own preferences. Yet it happens all the time.

Not that I want to burst your bubble, but the movie is rated a dismal 5.5 on IMDb. One reviewer said it was a good
story, but a very poorly made movie. So I'll probably skip it. Too many movies, too little time!

Quite all right. I rather liked it, but tastes vary & nothing wrong with that.

Yep. That's why they make chocolate and vanilla.

I have a sneaky suspicion that this show will become the Bernie show since she is the tough female cop. Anne Hillerman made Bernie the main detective in her novels so this might be her show in the end. The actress is solid BUT I wanted to see the Joe and Jim show.

I love re those books!!!

So... thanks for the warning. You've told me all I need to know.

Books rarely arrive to the screen exactly as they are written----that's a given. Tired of people always complaining about that.

There’s a huge difference between adapting a book to the screen and literally changing everything but the names of the characters. See also Apple’s Foundation and Netflix’s Rings of Power. All totally distort the source material including characters’ motivations, character, and back-story. Studios are just optioning popular books, writing their own stories, and cut-and-pasting character names.
