Anyone out there saving @Booksmart for another day, consider making that day TODAY. We are getting creamed by the big dogs out there and need your support. Don’t give studios an excuse not to green-light movies made by and about women. 💪❤️💪

I saw the film just for enjoy myslef, and was greatly entertained./

i'm all for all kinds of movies being made about men & women, & you can throw in every sexual preference and economic class & any other intersectional classification you can name. i'll give them all an honest shot.

but i really disliked this movie. i thought it was such a pandering, overly woke drag.

i know this film wasn't made for me. but lady bird & eighth grade weren't made for me either, and i absolutely loved those films.

booksmart is getting all kinds of great reviews, so i'm sure it's the case that many of the people who are seeing it love it to death. i was ready to be one of them, but i thought it was no fun, and far too up it's own self-satisfied posterior.

it kinda reminded me of that episode of south park where everyone was so pleased with themselves for owning a tesla (i think?) they went around smelling their own farts.

i feel like this 30 second video captures booksmart perfectly.

"...pandering, overly woke drag."

Man I hate that term!

I know there's always a slot for "alternative" but releasing this weekend was an odd choice.

It's a netflix movie so why waste your money at a theater when you know it will be streaming very soon. This is what happens when Netflix give a director a vanity release of their movie just to stroke their ego.. it tanks at the box office. People aren't idiots they know this show is already on netflix in foreign countries so why get screwed by watching it in a US theater.

reply

I am seeing it tonight. Looking forward to it.

It's getting great reviews at least. I wasn't really planning on seeing it but the reviews combined with the interview I saw with her on Seth Meyers changed my mind and I'm going to try to check it out this weekend.

Not by IMDb users.

7.5 isn't bad, especially for IMDB users. If you are going to decide whether a movie is good or bad from IMDB ratings, then you really shouldn't be watching movies. I saw it, and it was good.

Unless your standards are VERY low, you WILL be disappointed. I too was impressed with a teen comedy getting an 84 Metacritic score and on that basis went to see it this weekend. You will get a few laughs but nothing like.what you might be expecting. The only reason it's getting such high praise from what passes as professional critics nowadays is because it was written by women and directed by one. This is considered "progressive" amongst the dingalings who take the #MeToo horseshit seriously. All it really proved, however, is that women can make ripoff raunchy teen sex comedies just as bad as any man. Hardly one giant leap for womankind!

reply

Well if you were to see some of the women I've made company with than you would know my standards are in fact VERY low. So I suspect this may be right up my alley ;)

Amen

She's busting her hump with talk show appearances, I keep seeing her and the girls popping up everywhere, but not much of a push with the marketing.

reply

its not a major studio release, so mainly social media presence and targeted ads
