Why does Annie get so mad......

When the officer wants her to bake something after they spend the night together, as if she hasnt been able to bake since the failure of her bakery. But earlier in the movie she gets out all her utensils and makes a very intricate cupcake, im assuming because she missed doing it. Just thought that was a stragne thing for her to get pissy about and walk out on him

She overreacted a little, but I think it was a painful reminder of the failure of her business. Maybe she just didn't want to think about it at that moment. She had already told him at the bar she wasn't in to it anymore. He was being a little pushy and she just wasn't in the mood. She acted weird but I also think she was dealing with a bit of depression and sometimes a person can act out of character.

For a movie I adored from beginning to end, this is one small point I felt missed the mark a bit. Not so much her overreaction, but the entire thing seemed so awkwardly contrived. Like they were looking too hard to give her a reason to freak out. I just can't picture a guy scouring a store so early in the morning, her not waking up at all even once to notice him gone so long, while he scrapes together what he guesses are the right baking ingredients. And to bake what? Aside from flour, sugar, butter and milk, from that point you pretty much need very specific additional ingredients to make something.

I'm not sure what would have been a better conflict launch, but that was very weak IMO.

Yes thats what i was thinking too. It was just weird. Still love the movie though

I thought it was weird as hell of him - he's basically saying "cook me breakfast". Any woman would be offended. Sure, it wasn't his intention, but that's how it played to me immediately, even before she freaked out.

I think he viewed it as a healing practice, for her to get back into her baking. It's a case of a man or woman, well-intentioned, but wrong in trying to "fix" their partner. His timing was terrible of course, literally just as she's waking up. It's a bit too much for her, but also, she doesn't want to be "fixed".

I thought Officer Rhodes buying all those ingredients was so sweet and something a really nice guy would do with good intentions, I think the reason Annie freaked out and picked a fight with him was because she was overwhelmed with how nice he was and she had to pick a fight! She was incredibly dysfunctional and her own worst enemy from the beginning of the movie!

What happens in the meadow at dusk? NOTHING!, EVERYTHING!

I agree with most of what u said except about Annie being dysfunctional and her own worst enemy. She was just a normal middle aged woman going thru a rough time. She was struggling to get thru her issues and had a few missteps, but let's b honest, most of her issues were either caused by or provoked by Helen (and in a small way, Lillian). I mean, come on, how would anyone react if they felt their bff was replacing them? And Lillian kinda was, in some ways. What kind of friend was Lillian to either not notice or allow Helen to constantly one-up and belittle Annie???
Other than that, I agreed with u about why she reacted like that.

I don't pretend to know much about women but one thing I do know is that you don't insist a bitch get up and make you breakfast until at least the fourth date. This applies even if she used to run a bakery.

reply

It wasnt breakfast he was asking her to make. He wanted her to get back into baking like she did when she had her bakery. It just seemed so weird she got mad about it when she had already baked something earlier.
She was supposed to make a bakery item, not breakfast

reply

If it was at some other time of day, then it might not be breakfast. But when it is the first thing upon waking up, it's making breakfast.

Nice character, you should workshop it more though.

Although Annie overreacted a little walking out of his home, I don't think she was without reason.

This was her career, her livelihood that ultimately was a big fat failure, not to mention bringing up bad memories with her ex. She has made it quite clear to Rhodes how she felt talking about baking etc...and looked visibly uncomfortable whenever he brought it up. It was presumptuous for Rhodes to assume that she would like to just start baking again for him. There was no maliciousness in his actions of course, but he made a bit of a mistake.

When you hate yourself, you look for places and people to blame it on. She clearly wasn't in a good place since her business collapsed. Failing in life affects people differently.

While she could have handled it more gracefully and took it for what it was, really he was moving pretty fast for where they were at that point. It came off as being pretty insensitive IMO when she had told him how she was upset about the bakery not working out and how she didn't feel like baking anymore, and here he was trying to push that on her. Also did kind of have that "go make me breakfast" vibe to it.
