I felt the first movie was the best, the next 5 ok, because of good back story been told.
The last one, they seemed to just want to maximise blood and gore, unrealistic traps as well, the only good bit really the ending, also felt like it was a low budget movie in places with quality of acting compared to other 6.
Yeah, I don't even remember this one much, tbh. Just bits and pieces, including the beginning and the twist
But the introduction of the 3D gimmick meant that the focus would be placed firmly on the trap set pieces. This was one year removed from Avatar, and 3D was destroying every blockbuster in its wake at this time
Saw is at its best when it deals with the psychological aspects of the lore. That's why none of the sequels have come close to the original. Because none of the sequels have really focused on those aspects lol. For me, the franchise is mostly one giant missed opportunity
In the original you deal with big ideas such as people wasting their lives and taking them for granted, "trials by fire" or having people redeem themselves through extreme acts, the value and meaning of life, blah blah blah, etc. etc.
Big ideas, generally speaking. But the series rapidly devolves into "torture porn", which the original, as graphic and brutal as it was, was definitely not
And yeah, the budget of all of the sequels seems to drop significantly. Cary Elwes and Tobin Bell aren't huge names, but they are established and respected actors. The sequels all seem to consist only of no-names (excepting Spiral) and the writers are nowhere near the same league as Leigh Whannell
Basically you go from a clever and innovative psychological horror to the cheapest form of exploitative filmmaking
Yea so true! It was too many sequels & it just got worse with maybe a few cool parts but it was never the same. I think the series should have stopped at part 1 u know.
The first 6 were serious and grim. This film went the 'popcorn' teen film route, felt quite lighthearted and comedic at times. They also shown too much gore and did it in a manner for the 3D (intestines flying out) which just became a bit silly and over the top.
Also the fact the first 6 had the same cinematographer plays a part. This one just looked cheaper (even though it had the highest budget). I've heard some people same the color grading was botched for the home video releases and has never been corrected, that may partly explain why this film looks the ugliest and cheapest in the franchise.
Sillier than the previous 6 + the cheapest looking = clearly the weakest entry of the original 7 films.
With regards to the colour grading as far as the blood goes, yeah it was pink! It was pink at the cinema and still pink on streaming TV and DVD! It took away so much of the illusion.
I'd be lying if I said I'm not shocked this franchise has spawned 10 movies.. I never would've expected that.. I feel like the 1st movie truly was the Best, if for anything, the way it ended with that dude getting up off the floor that he had been lying on for 90 minutes or however long that movie was, while looking dead as dead can be and then he stands up and walks out leaving that other guy to suffer and it was incredibly well done and something I didn't see coming by a mile.. I would've simply left this as a standalone movie..
Truer words have never been spoken. The first one is up there with Scream. Horror movies that came in, changed the game, and then got plagued by way too many sequels.
I didn't see the ending coming either, and I was like "whaaaaa....." š³. The expression on Adam's face (Leigh Whannell) said it all - absolute disbelief, utter confusion, and deep fear. The screams from him that echoed into the credits after John shut the door haunted me for days. A brilliant ending!
This was indeed meant to be a standalone movie but according to Leigh Whannel, so many people wanted to know who this guy was and why he did these things. So they decided to make a sequel and, of course, the fan base grew much bigger.....and the rest is history.
The general consensus is that the first Saw is the best but I chalk that down to the whole āfirst is always the bestā doctrine that way too many people will just blindly accept without question.
As far as Iām concerned, itās BY FAR the most overrated!!!
OK, I somewhat respect it for being the introduction to such an iconic horror franchise, but thatās as far as it really goes.
Simply put, the pacing is tedious, the premise is dull and is not as original and many proclaim it to be (basically a Se7en rip-off), and the main characters and performances arenāt anything special (sorry Adam and Dr. Gordon fans).
Then there are the so-called āamazing twistsā that are actually really stupid:
Like, why would the mastermind behind the whole thing pretend to be a corpse in the bathroom? John gains literally nothing from it at all that he wouldn't get from just watching the security camera. Why would he need to be there in the room with them pretending to be a corpse? And also, wouldn't it be incredibly easy for them to tell that he's not dead? Even if he took some muscle relaxant (like Saw III retconned in), he'd still need to, you know... breath.
And believe it or not, you move slightly when you breathe. No way two people in very close proximity to him, one of which is literally an experienced doctor, wouldn't be able to tell he's not dead.
And then thereās the whole twist with Zep which was fāing stupid too.
Like, he's clearly showing sadistic pleasure when terrorising Gordon's family and watching the game through the monitors, yet we're expected to believe that he's simply following the rules for his survival?
On top of that, Zepās just an all-round lame villain - heās not interesting nor intimidating, just flat-out annoying!
Now, Iām a fan of the Saw series as a whole, with Saw II being the film that solidified my liking for said series.
Saw II had a better premise, better pacing, better introduction to the iconic villain, John Kramer (AKA Jigsaw), and a much better twist - one that at least makes sense within the context of the narrative and is sufficiently foreshadowed while still being a surprise.
Yeah, I stopped responding because that pathetic debate was going round in circles, and in end proved to be nothing but a string of straw men arguments from you.
Iāve got better things to do with my time.
And then what, you start stalking me on these boards? And even PMād me about me not responding to your last post?
I thought your name looked familiar.
Get a hobby, man!
Misguided and delusional?
Yeah, might wanna take a good look at yourself there.
And youāre clearly stalking, made so by your lack of other contribution to this particular board other than to come slam me without a proper rebuttal.
Attention seeking, are we?
As previously said, find yourself a hobby!
And be careful on that high horse, yeah? Itās a long way downā¦
