Who's the father? (Spoiler)

I've seen the movie and am still slightly confused as to whom the father is. I thought at first it was Jack's but then after both being referred to as the dad, I thought maybe they didn't get a dna test and decided to both be dads to the child.

The way it was shown I thought Jack was the father but Bridget loved and married Mark, but, then Mark calls him his son so slightly confusing

I assume Mark is the father, but, it's surprising Jack was so close to them, seemingly even being Mark's best man

I honestly think they were just trying to play one last misdirect before they told you that Mark was the father. He'd made it pretty obvious when she was in labor that he still loved her and wanted to be with her no matter what. And she wanted him. So he marrying Mark was the no brainer. They had a little fun with the baby thing. But Mark says what are you doing with my son. Jack mentions he is not used to being around the baby. Mark is the daddy. If Jack had been the biological father he'd have been used to the baby. And being the gentleman that he is I don't believe Mark would have stopped him. I honestly believe that Mark and Jack just kinda ended up friends. They were getting along fairly well before they found out about the baby thing. Jack helped them get to the hospital. He probably is the god father.

We had this discussed with my friend after the screening - I still say it was Jacks, because Mark did say it won't matter if the baby is not his. I see no reason for them to stay close friends after if he isn't (stay in touch - probably, but not being at the altar holding the baby on wedding day...). Jack on the other side said "It will change everything" if he is not the father. Yes, Mark did refer to that boy as "my son" - but that would be normal thing to say about baby you are raising and living together.

I think the baby is biologically Jack's.

1. Why all the shots of him cuddling the baby at the wedding?

2. Why is he at the wedding at all, if not for a family connection?

3. Mark saying "What are you doing with my son?" or something like that is a way of the film saying "Even though the baby is biologically Jack's, it's still Mark's son in the true sense of the word.

reply

Don't really understand why this is a debate. Mark refers to the boy as "my son". (The little boys surname is Darcy: why would Jack allow his son to have another man's surname?) Jack replies "I don't know what I'm doing with him" or words to that effect, making it clear Jack does not spend much time with the baby....he's not the father.

why would Jack allow his son to have another man's surname?

Because it's not up to him, and he has no legal right to "allow" anything?

So when Bridget's mother shows up at the hospital, she looks at the baby, and says "He looks just like..." before she stops herself. I don't know how much she's hung out with Jack over the last few months, but she has known Mark since he was a boy. Just sayin'.

I wouldn't mind betting that most people who have seen the movie, didn't see that final scene in the crazy credits. It's right at the very end of the credits, and in our particular movie theatre, me and my husband, and one other person, were the only people left by that time. I like to watch the credits, but usually there's a mass exodus as soon as credits start to roll. I think that's a shame but that's what seems to happen. Anyway, if that final picture is the ultimate clue, then Mark is the father.

reply

The baby is clearly Mark's son.

reply

Did you miss the part where Bridget says his full name? He's a Darcy, ergo Mark's son.

reply

I was really hoping that there might be a twist at the end and yet another bloke pop up (like Harry Hill or another comedian) - now that would be funny
