And all at the tender young age of 45

I just saw her on Ellen promoting the movie. Hugh Grant declined to be in the movie because he didn't like the script. I wonder if its because we're supposed to believe Bridget is pregnant at 45? I mean yeah it happens but its not all that common, right? Is the script going to address the subject of it being a late-life pregnancy?

reply

Since then Grant plays in serious movies that he did not like the script??? Maybe nobody wanted him in the movie???😕

reply

I do not believe that no one wanted Grant in the movie. I do believe however that he was being difficult and had to go ruin things. It wouldn't have hurt him to even have given us fans a little cameo or something. Things won't be the same without Daniel.

I've never *beep* a dying creature before. Do you feel things more deeply, I wonder? -Dorian Gray

Well, maybe Bridget is supposed to be younger than Renee is in real life? I've know a couple of women who have gotten pregnant at 44-45. It can be challenging but they got lucky and didn't have to resort to IVF.

reply

I remember later in BJD#1 that she wrote in her diary turning 33 and the movie came out in 2001. The setting in BJ Baby is 2010. So, 9+33=42. So, in this film, Bridget will be around 42-43 years old and Renee is 46. Mark Darcy was 4 years older than Bridget, so he'll be 46-47 and Colin is 55 (unfortunately as much as I drool over Colin, his age is starting to show...still handsome, none the less). Please correct me if my math is bad.

A woman can get pregnant as long as she has not reached menopause. My mother was born when my grandmother was 49 without any complications. My grandmother had 5 previous children and my mother was the last. She went into menopause shortly after my mother was born. However, I think some research has shown that conceiving after the age of 40 can present some problems and possibly produce some birth defects and abnormalities in the children. Consequently, some avoid pregnancy after the age of 40.

Here's some additional info I found:

"The average age of U.S. women at the time of menopause is 51 years. The most common age range at which women experience menopause is 48-55 years. Premature menopause is defines as menopause occurring in a woman younger than 40 years."
"Some women reach menopause at an unusually early age -- before 45 or so -- with no known cause, which could be the result of an inherited issue or a one-time genetic mutation." (notice how I bolded "unusually early age")
"After menopause, the only way a woman can get pregnant is through a donor egg and IVF."
(These are excerpts from a couple of studies..others may have different results. Many things have to be factored in. For example, menopause is more likely to occur at a slightly earlier age in women who smoke, have never been pregnant, live at high altitudes, ethnicity, etc.)

That's so interesting! Thanks for that informative reply!

I think Renee looks about her age. I'm not sure why people are getting angry at the idea that she'd be conceiving "so late." I guess maybe it's not as common in the US/UK for a woman to give birth in her 40s. Like somehow that's a bit taboo, for whatever reason...

I've worked in Asia for many years and it's totally normal if you find out that someone just gave birth and she happens to be 40+. In fact, when China removed its 1-child policy recently, a few of my colleagues were quite eager to conceive a second child. Almost all of them who were actually serious about it ended up successful. And they were all 45+.

Anyway, as for Colin - Oh wow, his age does show! I didn't catch anything that he had been in for just a short while (maybe the last 3-4 yrs). I think the last film I saw of his was The King's Speech. Then I just saw Kingsmen last year and was FLOORED by how much he has aged. I still adore him but he looks every bit his 55...maybe even a tad more.

reply

You're quite welcome.

Some personal observations and tidbits regarding Colin:
Colin looked younger when he had a tad more meat on his bones and a slightly chubbier face...maybe he needs a little more fat to fill in the jaw line. I guess he had to lose some weight to be more agile for the fight scenes in Kingsman, but that weight loss is now making him look a little more gaunt. Maybe I should send him some gift cards for McDonalds or Burger King, or send him a couple of pounds of bacon. I've got approx 30 of his movie DVD's and observed (via his films) his physical changes throughout his career...his weight fluctuations resemble a roller-coaster, up/down, up/down. Anyway, he stayed young looking for a very long time. When he was 24 in the movie "Camille", he looked like a baby at 15. At 29 in "Valmont", he looked 22. At 41 in BJD#1, he looked 36. In his late 40s, he looked like he was in his mid 40s. See the trend? Now in his 50s, he looks like he's in his 50s....it's caught up with him. Damn it!! Can't stay young forever..sigh!! (I guess you can tell by now I'm a "Firthy".) I'm so looking forward to seeing this film, and it was very nice corresponding with you.☺

Cheers.

Did you see Mama Mia? I thought his legs looked like bird legs in that movie! That made him look older to me. But maybe he always had really thin legs.

reply

Yes, saw Mamma Mia, but will not re-watch it...not my kind of show. From what I've observed, yes, Colin always had rather thin legs no matter how much weight gain he had from hip and up. My hubby was the same....weight gain in upper extremities, but no change in the legs. Rather disproportionate.☺

Breaking news, Westward7!! Janet Jackson is pregnant...at the ripe age of 49 and she'll be 50 on May 16th (11 days from now). And this will be her first child. But, then again, we both knew that older 40s women still have a shot at motherhood. I just hope she makes it to full term without any complications and has a healthy babe. Here's the link:

No way she looks 42 in the movie!

My mom had her last baby at 45, a few months before turning 46. It's possible.

reply

My mum had me naturally at 45, it's possible!

It's actually becoming more common than you would think. After burying 4 stillborn babies, at nearly 42 I became pregnant. I was so worried that I would be the 'grandma' in my birthing class, I was surprised to see that more than half of the class were either in their 40s or nearing their forties, four of the other women were older than me.

At the tender age of 45 and still acting like a kid. She was charming and now she's annoying. In the second movie I suddenly realised at one point that Mark should just walk away from her since she's too high maintenance, doesn't know what love is and can't make up her mind about anything. They had to make the other girl a lesbian. The girl who was better for him. More mature and knew what she wanted like he did and they made her a lesbian as a cop out. Because everyone wants Bridget since she's such a catch (even women who met her a few times fall in love with her clutzy behaviour everyone is supposed to think is cute when you're in 30's and 40's too). Eye roll. Life's too short for someone like Mark to be with someone like that who would be back and forth with him forever and him not knowing when.

Hugh Grant probably didn't want to be in a movie with the main character having sex with two different men with obviously no birth control or protection. Then gets pregnant and doesn't know who the father is?

Then like a douche he has to fight for her? What guy would fight for a woman who is hooking up like that?

Before anyone gets all crazy, I would hope a woman in her 40's would also not be fighting for a guy who has knocked up a couple different women.

Women in the 19th century, were having healthy children well into their forties. They didn't have a dozen children all at once! I have no problem with well-financed older women having children. They will want for little and have privileged, comfortable and secure upbringings.

Are you actually advocating teen motherhood? 

reply

agree

reply

Preach! Yes, we've all heard of exceptions to the rule, but female fertility really begins to decline at age 35, and getting pregnant after 37 can be very difficult if not downright impossible for a lot of women (unless she wants to use a younger woman's eggs).

I feel bad for women in their 40s who really want kids and see all the celebrities doing it. They are most likely using egg donation, but they won't fess up to it and keep giving other women hope.

Agree.

read the plot of the movie, it states she is ENTERING her 40s not that she is already in her 40s

reply

she has her 43rd birthday at the start of the movie.

reply

Wrong. She's 43 in the role of Bridget.
