Fans, have you checked out POKER FACE yet?

We'll never get anything close to COLUMBO again, but have any of you checked out Poker Face?

There are a few noticeable differences, and a few similarities.

Similar
The credits font is identical
At one point in Ep1 "This old man" is playing in the casino
Murder shown to the audience first, and the star Charlie has to figure it out
It's known as Inverted detective story format, or Howcatchum, or Reverse Whodunnit

Different
She is not a detective
She is on the run, and travels to a different town every episode

After the murder which is shown first, the next scene flashes back to before the murder, to show Charlie's relationship to the victim.

The suspects are not all filthy rich!

She doesn't have the enjoyable mannerisms of Columbo, but it's entertaining to watch the "howcatchum" format again, for sure.

With her not being a detective, I immediately thought "OH NO, here's another MURDER SHE WROTE female who encounters death every single week of her life", LOL. OK so there's that. But at least she's "on the move", so it's not like there's a murder every week in sleepy Cabot Cove, MAINE! That town quickly propelled to the highest murder rate per capita, in the world!

Dick Van Dyke (ironically a former Columbo murderer!) also had way too many connections to the murders on Diagnosis Murder, but at least his son was a detective, and he was a consultant to the police, so it was more justified.

Not yet but it’s in my queue.

Watched it. Was good fun. Hoping for a 2nd season. The "Columbo" credits font were obvious to me right away. Came to watch Columbo through my Dad who loved it. That's now about 35 years ago since my first watch. And I still watch regularly with my wife to this day. Big fan.

Both shows share great supporting actors and guest starts. Beat up old car (even though in top shape the Barracuda would be a dream car), similar acting routine (play dumb while being smart) and she even got the ""just one more thing" routine going in an episode if I remember right. Both quirky characters.

She's no Columbo. Nobody ever will (please spare me a reboot). But it's a good show in style of Columbo. I enjoyed it.

Here's another one right on its heels: Try Elsbeth on CBS. It premiered on Leap Day, 2024. Available On-Demand, and on Paramount. And weekly Thursday nights, 10pm ET.

Thanks for the recommendation. I will surely check that out.

I'm sure that the producers are fans of Columbo too. Benjamin Bratt is great in this show. He should play villains more often.

The producers / writers have said in interviews that they binged Columbo during COVID, and intentionally drew many ideas from the series.

The class aspect of Columbo appealed to me.

I don't need to see Columbo outsmarting a social media influencer or someone who runs a food truck.
