What I didn't like about the movie.

Granted, the movie wasn't terrible, I've seen worse. It could have been better and there were many areas it could improve upon, most notably casting and acting.

However, here are the things that killed it for me:

1. College teacher is smarter then the police?
Not just any police either, but I got the impression from the film that the lead cop was someone high up on the food chain.

2. Brennan plans very carefully, but neglects to notice that the birthday party will be at the zoo? Dude, read the freaking invitation.

3. Brennan wields a gun with some skill, and gathers enough gumption to do a one man raid on a meth lab. Really? That's a little far out there.

4. Said meth lab is only protected by a wily dog, some big guy, and a dude who stupidly promises to kill Brennan. Here's a hint, when a guy is really desperate and has a gun in your face, don't promise to hunt him down and kill him. If that were me I just might shoot you in the face and save myself from the sequel.

5. After going through all that, his wife wants to throw herself out of the car?
That was absolutely terrible writing.

6. Then, finally, we are treated to an epilogue where the detective, who obviously couldn't care enough in the beginning of the movie, decides to look for the button, and doesn't even find it even though we get to see it. I mean, what was the point of that scene? Was it to prove to us that she didn't do it? After everything Brennan went through, I honestly don't care if she did it or not. the scene only serves to give us some satisfaction that - hey - she was a good guy all along and deserved to be free.

Is that suppose to make me feel better? Brennan still had to kill someone (even if he deserved it) so that makes only one murderer on the loose.

Now, if the detective had found the button then it would have served as some Gift of the Magi type of irony. That she might have been set free after all so all of his efforts were in vein, yet none of which would not have come to pass if he had not set those events in motion in the first place.

Although, I don't see how a single button would have exonerated her, regardless of who it fell off of.

Now that I'm on a rant...

7. What's with that girl asking if that is what the detective calls coffee? Is that the same girl from the beginning of the movie at the restaurant? If so, who gives a crap. Its a pointless scene. That should have been on the cutting room floor.

8. Speaking of pointless, the other mother - Karen's mom what was her name... Nicole? Whatever, too much camera time for an unimportant character.

9. She? Yes, that is what Brennan's wife said when he came back to the car and reported that "she" had taken their son to the zoo. The tone in which implies jealousy. Really? The man just popped a meth producer, dumped a dead meth dealer, robbed a meth lab, doctored records, B&E, struck in officer, BROKE YOU OUT OF CUSTODY, and then dragged your whiny useless ass through the streets to save you and your family and you want to inquire about a supposed relationship with a woman you don't know.

And then throw yourself out of a car?

Poor acting.
Poor casting.
Poor writing.
Poor directing.

Thanks God I don´t have your brain!!! I think you didn´t understand anything about this movie, and poor acting?casting?writing? and directing? I suspect you prefer Harry Potter , Skyline and Transformers,Don´t you?

reply

Oh wow, look someone on IMDB who insults others who have a different opinion than his own. I've never seen anything like that before!!

Damn, easy on the pwnage.
Can't argue against the points raised though, it was VERY annoying at times.
Still, it's an entertaining flick if you manage to switch your thinker off.

Was only really the wife attempting to throw herself out the car I find questionable. I think the point was to convey how desperate she was to be with her son, but being dead wasn't really going to help that. That said I suppose it's not unreasonable to expect her to be somewhat emotional, just thought it was a bit over the top personally.

Oh, and yeah, I'd have preferred it if they'd left her guilt or innocence unanswered, or if she'd been guilty perhaps.

Still, wasn't a bad movie.

Honestly, this is the only point in the movie that really bugged me. Everything else was minor enough that I could have just looked away. But after that scene it just compounded the other issues and made them seem worse to me. I no longer have as much animosity toward this movie as when I originally posted. Looking back I found the movie to be enjoyable.

This one point still bothers me though and has reflected itself in my overall opinion of it.

I have never replied on these boards but felt I should. The only negative comment I had about the movie was I thought it dragged.

I noticed the 2nd poster replied to most of your things that you disliked. But I wouldn't mind adding a couple of things.

1. Again I agree with the 2nd poster. John had planned quite well for the escape. Being a teacher (Professor) I would imagine he would have the intelligence to plan for something like this.

2. In addition to the 2nd post, I think he probably had that much on, he didn't realize the time or probably did it deliberately, so the child is occupied for the morning.

3. It's a movie.

4. 2nd post discussed this.

5. I was a bit shocked by her throwing herself out of the car. But I think her reasons we're partly due to the shock of it, escaping whereas a couple of hours she was behind bars and had come to accept it.

6. The main reason of my post. I wished that at the end the cops had found the button. Would have been a happy ending for me. If you going to go to all that effort 3 years later I would have liked that. Maybe not on the first look but opens it a 2nd time and it appears.

7. Answered previously.

8. I think she was their for a couple of reasons. Obviously somewhere for the kid to be during the breakout period, and you need to build that connection so the audience knows who's party the kid is going to. I think it also shows the feelings "John" had towards his wife outweighed any other girls that might catch his eye.

9. I think again when she sounds jealous. It's more of shock than anything else. Of all places for the child to be, and the not knowing the relationship with the mother and child.

As I said earlier I would have liked had the police found the button. It doesn't make her innocent but helps her cause, also allows for the truth section not to be included and leaves it up to the audience to make up their mind Or delete that scene and show what really happened and don't have the button sequence.

I really enjoyed the movie and thought if I could comment on a couple of things it might change your mind on the movie.
It was interesting watching the impact on the person outside of the prison who is dealing with their partner in jail. I hadn't seen a movie where that happens. Normally it's just about them inside the jail.

great points Timescrew!! I particularly agree with number 9! I thought it was just "too much". I remember thinking: gimme a break!

Dude I'd hate to be as cynical as you OP. A fictional movie is just that. At no point does this movie claim to be even based on true events. You want to see movies completely out of the realm of reality? Transformers? Batman? maybe you can catch the new Cowboys and Aliens movie? Talk about how unrealistic it all is. *Cough* Loser.

reply

Why should a teacher not be smarter than a cop? I think it's very likely. The teacher probably has a wider horizon than the cop.

reply

I agree about more or less everything the OP said.
This is not a bad movie, but it's not great neither.
The slow pacing, mediocre acting, unrealistic characters (and their acts), and bad storytelling are what kills an otherwise good movie.
