Why did they have to go to Venezuela?

Know this for a fact....i´m venezuelan, I don´t know if Russel Crowe made a little research before buying those tickets, ...but Caracas is one of the most dangerous cities in the whole world....is that bad, that a person gets killed every 15 minutes, just by robbing you a phone....and it doesnt really matter whether you resist the robbery or not...they kill you anyway...and do you know whats funny, the venezuelan people from caracas are very arrogants, because they think they are better than the rest of the venzuelans..What is true, is that he based his actions in the matter that Venezuela has Strong Issues with USA, all due to our President Chavez....a really intelligent guy by the way (i´m being sarcastic)

Caracas is 70% a horrible place, crowded by the so familiar "BARRIOS DE CARACAS", i suggest you search the meaning on google, and 30% a not that bad place...

I saw on the website, that the filming location were actually in COLOMBIA...i dont blame the Director for not wanting to do a 60 second scene in Caracas City.

reply

But if i got this right they only changed their flight in Caracas and flied further (though i know there's no escape from crime in your country).
But it's a reasonable choice, since there he is safe of extradition to US and could bribe officials to get new identity.

> our President Chavez....
Apropos, our (Republic of Belarus) "president" is akin to yours and they exchange visits quite frequently. There're strong rumours that he considers Venezuella to be an alternate location (just like a hero of Russel Crowe :-) ), in case things develop like in Tunis/Egypt.

reply

yeah man, everybody who comits political crimes, come here to venezuela to hide...thats no secret

yeah, they probably took another plane in caracas to another country.

Venezuela might have a extradition treaty but the current govt. probably wouldn't send anybody back. Most of the places on that list are far worse than Venezuela. Like who would want to live in Somalia? or the the Sudan. And many are in central Africa which is a huge hot zone for ware right now. Can rule out the Arab countries in the Middle East unless you convert. There are the island nations like Samoa but they be hard to get to from the U.S. or Canada. I am sure most planes would land in LA to change flights. China and Indonesia could be a similar problem. I suppose if you could get to Andora, Moldova, Armenia, or Montenegro they would be better than Venezuela.

reply

From what I've heard about a lot of those places they wouldn't be so bad. UAE is supposed to be a great time, but probably much too expensive when you're living on a tight budget....

Also a lot of African countries on the list are relatively safe, and based on everything I read about Venezuela on here, much safer than that, including Rwanda, who has a bloody history but is supposed to be quite safe now.

What's wrong with Andorra? It's located in the mountains (Pyrenaees?) and borders Spain. I've been there on vacation years ago and thought it was beautiful.

reply

1. US citizens require a visa to get into Russian Federation. That can take weeks and they would figure out the forged identity.

2. andorra is lovely but its a small population and very expensive to live there.

3. Many of those other countries will also ask for a visa to be issued prior to the journey.

4. Innoculation shots must be given before going to many african countries due to the high rate of endemic diseases over there. How is he going to get his wife those shots before they go?

5. Venezuela is on the effin Carribean, its gorgeous. Spanish is much easier to learn and more globally useful than most other languages aside from english.

6. The only other feasible places might be Bosnia or albania...but that would require layovers. We have direct flights to Caracas from Texas all the time, lots of people from Venezuela and Columbia here

So sad to hear the country is in such bad shape, I really want to visit one day.

Some of these countries would be cool to hide out in: the Asian countries (China, Indonesia, Taiwan, Vietnam) are going great guns right now, so they'd be OK, and Taiwan is a surprisingly cheap place to live, according to friends who moved there. UAE (which includes Dubai) and Bahrain is great, but too expensive if you’re on the run! Still, if you made a good living out there (or you pulled off a big bank robbery), these are the only places where you could hide out in luxury, as it were…

If they could fly to China without going through a territory that extradition with the US, that would probably be the best country out of that list, in the long run. OF course, they have to prepare, educate themselves, do research, but there are lots of American and European expats in China, so they wouldn't stand out and they would be able to find a english-speaking environment. Plus, there are lots of attractive industries in China these days.

That's a VERY good point. So, is there a place in Venezuela that is not a slaughterhouse?

I am sure he just thought of places that dont have good relations with the US government and I guess Venezuela was the one he chose

other places that would not have extradited them back to the US

Russia
China
Mexico(probably not, they have enough problem with there own criminals, especially since they are funded by them)
Cuba

You guys are all missing a HUGE point here. In my estimation Venezuela becomes the ONLY option after you take into consideration this point: LAYOVERS. Venezuela is perhaps the only of his "option countries" that the family can get to without a layover. By the time they were midflight I'd say, Interpol and international airports (especially given the police were relatively sure they were on a plane out of the country) would have been notified and on the lookout for passengers from north american airports. To get to the Easter European countries, the Middle-Eastern Countries, and African countries, you'd most certainly need to stop in Europe. Most likely London's Heathrow or Amsterdam. Landing there you may just as well land in the USA since relations are so good. And finally going to Asian or southern pacific countries almost certainly requires a layover in L.A. or Hawaii. This means he HAS to get to his final destination (or at least final for the short term) in ONE FLIGHT. That leaves South American Countries...and thus Venezuela.

Better to take your chances in Venezuela than in an American prison with a bunch of Bubbas and Shaniquas.

reply

Yes, Venezuela is very unsafe, but there ARE safe places, you CAN have a family here. It depends on the zone you live. Some are safer than others, of course, and the closest thing you can experience when it comes to crime (in a supposedly safe zone) is if someone robs your cellphone or something like that, but the OP is overreacting a little bit.

Can't believe anyone hasn't mentioned the "Papillon" story yet.. Venezuela was likely chosen by the writers as a homage to the famous french prison escapee Papillon, who after escaping prison in Guyana ended up in Venezuela and lived a kind of global celebrity life there... Liam Neeson's character mentions Papillon.

The US is not very democratic at all. Venezuela is MUCH more of a democracy. Proof? Just read this:

@alberto rpa:

1. "is that bad, that a person gets killed every 15 minutes". That is a LIE. A very stupid one, by the way. It's ok if you don't want to live Caracas, but is really sick to act how you do, trying to pass your moronic prejudices as "facts".

2. Venezuela DOES have extradition treaties with the U.S., and there are several criminals is US prisons sent by the Venezuelan authorities. And I'm talking about recent events.

3. I'll wait for your response to the other two points, because I really doubt that you can even count to three...

I'm Venezuelan, I live far from Caracas, thank god. That city is a strange choice for someone who wants to hide from the american goverment. Although, the women are beautiful, you'll find everything you have in the US, all the fast food franchises, the huge shopping malls, but the city is dangerous, I mean Detroit and Oakland level dangerous.
