Why did he do that to Ingrid?

SPOILERS!

Why did he kill her?

Was she a traitor for the Sweds or something?.. I'm confused. Cause if he did it just to keep her silent, it really made me not like him from the start.

reply

Who did he shoot in the face?

reply

Just because someone is professional does not mean they don't make mistakes.

Yes, well, even assassins are human beings and may want to experience love. That causes one to do unrational things. Like getting involved in a potentially dangerous relatioship.

You mean shot in the back? It was not just that she had disliked him but she would have described him to police.

Justification has not much to do with professional killers. He did have trouble coping with it later, though. Even regretted, I think. If he hadn't acted in a moment as his 'profession' requires and gave it a second thought she might have lived.

What's a PMSL?

He shot her in the back, btw, not in the face. Are you sure we are talking about the same woman?

The female assassin got it in her face when Jack/Edward manipulated the gun.

Anyway, this is the impression I got from the movie. He acted intuitively and was haunted by that later on. Although it is disputable whether he loved her. All we see that they are spending time together and Ingrid seems to be in love.

I am talking about the Clooney's characters values, not mine. My ex-girlfriends are all still alive. :)

Fair enough.

Still, I was talking about a movie character and fitting myself into his shoes. I am an (semi-pro)actor myself. I could play Hitler too and try to see the world from his eyes then.

In reality my heroes are more like Dalai Lama. World is much more interesting trying to see it through his eyes.

Mikainen, I'm totally with you here. I think tylerdaniel is being stubborn and not understanding the whole main point. Even look it up on wikipedia. I don't know why he keeps saying clooney shot her in the face, as he shot her from behind, but he did not want to do it. He is haunted by it throughout the entire film, even having a flashback/dream about it. He trusts no one and takes care of any loose ends, and in that regard he is a professional. The whole thing is that he has only pushed people away because of his profession, but is now desperate for love and human interaction. He had no choice but to shoot Ingrid. This movie was beautiful and I loved it.

Some people missed the point, no doubt. That's fine, just don't be so irritating about it.

reply

And some didn't miss the point.

It's a beautiful film. Comparing it to Bourne Identity, there is no comparison. I like Bourne, but the 'quietness' of it, and beautiful settings of this film allow for the subtle references to shine, instead of them 'being pointed out' at each turn, and then again flashbacks.

This film is most enjoyed by those whom appreciate doing their own thinking, and not being told when to think either. That's one reason why I love international films. The majority of international films allow the viewer room to reason for themselves, with no flashbacks.

Contempative moments by the main character are not flashbacks, as described in many a thread under this board, and in boards across genres. Those too lazy to have anything but 'movie' directives do NOT enjoy a film such as The American. They'd rather pop in a movie, more or less, as background noice while texting or playing a game on their phone.

This thread has made my night, thank all of you. (And as someone asked under another board "You're being sarcastic, right?". No, I'm not. The trouble with the majority of all the boards is that there is wayyy too much trolling. Or folks spouting off the same tribble the 15 other mindless commenters did before them.

This is a thinking man's board. Yaw Hoo!!!

@mikainen... It's a terrible phrase, and gets flagged and deleted from comments. Bookmark Urban Dictionary.com. It'll be of tremendous assistance.

I mean, Pavel said it right there before Edward absconded to Italy, "Try not to make any friends, Jack."

SPOILERS

The movie established he was a professional who was "losing his edge". In the beginning he had gotten involved with a woman, but killed her when he had the slightest suspicion she was "bait". Later on, as he further "lost his edge", he hesitated to shoot the Italian prostitute when he first suspected her after searching her purse and finding a gun.

I think at some point he realized Pavel was behind the hit and sabotaged the gun so that it would backfire.

Because she was trying to kill him! he figured that out.

reply

No she wasn't. She had nothing to do with it.

reply

Because she was trying to kill him! he figured that out.
WRONG! So 'he figured that out' only after people started shooting at him? He killed her because he wanted to avoid the awkward conversation next time they were in bed. "So those guys...? And your expertise as a trained killer... Anything you'd like to share?" No, we don't want to have that conversation. Ever!

After all, he's a professional.

reply

He had no option to be fair, she would have obviously got the police involved - and how would he explain himself to them? Why does he have a gun, why was someone trying to kill him, why the fake ID?

reply

The character has to be a cold blooded sob in order to be believable as an assassin. When he met with has handler, Pavel, soon after the incident Pavel asked him if Ingrid had set him up. Jack replied that she has nothing to do with it. So, one must assume that he considered her to be a loose end that he couldn't afford. Jack starts to become more human later in the film due to his friendship with the priest and his love affair with Clara.

reply

Yet hear I was thinking he shot her by mistake some of you may need to watch it again.
