But Jess chose the house, not the husband.

The husband was the adulterer and the one who researched and tracked down Issac to be a gun for hire to murder his wife. Issac knew the husband was the real target however and chose to turn the tables and kill the 'sinner'. All of this makes sense....however, Jess is the one who chose the house and had been wanting to visit it for months. She says in the end that she was the original sinner but Issac gave her a second chance at life. Okay....but what was she guilty of? If the house on the bayou attracts sinners, what was Jess considered to be being sinful about? Being bitter about her cheating husband? I'm confused.

When Jessica said she was a sinner, she was probably talking about the usual "bad" things people do like tell lies for whatever reason, etc. I don't think she meant she was a real bad sinner. The cop at the end responded to her by saying there are degrees, which indicates that Jessica's sins were not that bad, unlike her husband that cheated and attempted to have her killed.

I think the house attracted Jessica, not because of her sins, but because of her husband's. Isaac knew everything about everyone so he knew Jessica's husband was a true sinner so he lured the family to the house, and made himself available to meet the husband and pretended he would go along with him. Isaac planned everything, that's what he does. He tracked down the family, not the other way around.

I actually thought this was an excellent movie!

I might need to watch the ending again, because I'm like 87.5% sure that she said "But I'm not a sinner.." and then the lady said "It's a matter of degree."

What are the odds we watched this at the same time? Lol

Edit- She didn't even say she was a sinner. She said "but I'm not wicked"..

You were closer than me. I just watched that scene again and she said "but I'm not wicked" and then the cop says "it's a matter of degrees, Isaac has given you a second chance, embrace it." So she was a sinner, but not to the degree that her husband was. Isaac might also have been impressed by the way she tried to save her husband, even though she knew that he had planned to have her killed. And then she grabbed the can of gasoline from her daughter, not wanting her daughter to be traumatized by helping to kill Vivien. I think Jessica might have redeemed herself during the whole horrific time at the house. Isaac actually asked the husband if he wanted to call it off. He was giving him one more chance, but the husband said he definitely wants to go through with it so Isaac's mind was made up about him.

Did you also think this was a really good move? It was certainly original and well acted IMO. It held my interest from beginning to end which doesn't always happen with movies nowadays.

You're kind of freaking me out (not really) because I just went back and listened to the ending with captions on and edited my post to say "wicked" instead of "sinner".

I can't say I was blown away or anything, but it held my attention for sure. The ending was kinda 50/50 for me.

It would have been better if Isaac and his Pawpaw were just complete psychos, in my opinion.

I just saw your edit! I think we probably did watch this movie and the ending again at the same time, how funny!

Re: the ending, I was just happy that Jessica and her daughter made it out alive. 🙂 It's good to see a (semi)happy ending sometimes.

Me too. It was nice. The "everyone dies" trend is a bit played out.

Would have been less corny if they didn't drive by in the truck though... like really?

Just felt like we didn't need that scene.

I know what you mean. For a minute I thought the cop was going to betray her and give her to Isaac. I was actually relieved when I realized they were just passing, and the cop knew all about Isaac and sort of "worked" with him and his grandpa. Actually, the thing with the cop reminded me of The Midnight Meat Train. Did you see that?

reply

I have not.. but I'm tempted to watch it now.

I've heard good things about it before. Maybe I just need to get past the ridiculous title.. lol

If you like gore, you'll love Midnight Meat Train! I liked it a lot. It was very different, very creepy IMO.

If you do see it, toward the end in the scene with the cop, you'll understand what I meant by a similarity there. Just in that one scene.
