What a sad, empty life people are living!

It is incredible to me that these societies of the West have become so self centered, so self absorbed, so... empty. Having it all, cars, houses, money, the best schools in the world, seemingly having it all, at the same time are so empty and everyone is in the same boat.

People go to these festivals and they applaud films that portray what everyone is going thru, but no one wonders if there is anything else in life.

These films portray people as if all they can do is live, die and that is it. In them they sell the idea that it is the norm to have an absolute existential vacuum. It seems as if life is devoided of meaning, of ultimate and greater purpose. Wow!

Indeed, this is a godless society, where there is not good, to bad, no wrong, no right... just relativism, convenience, survival of the fittest.

Where is purpose? Where is life after this one....?

Where is God?

It is sooooo sad!!

A very interesting point you make, but one I ultimately disagree with and would love for you to further discuss more on this board.

You seem to suggest that people who applaud films such as Submarine never really wonder if there is anything else to life. How so?

I also would suggest this film is not only about life and death, but the quirky things that go on inbetween. I also feel that this film serves as a great posterity piece of the social climate in urban areas for the last 30 odd years. I think it was educational (yes educational!) because it is great when you read something or see something that you feel shows a situation that was similar to your life and still may be applicable to people in future.

God is completely irrelevant in this piece and there is no reason to bring that into this debate. And how you feel Submarine is relevant to survival of the fittest only draws me to a blank. These characters are in no way a animals on the wild plains of Africa and/or there is no Richard Dawkins here.

I also wonder when you make such a point about God are you just being humorous in your overall point and not really writing a real comment. If I am wrong about this last one please do EXPAND???

Yes it is. But think how much sadder this would be if the movie included the reality of social media and smartphones...much more sad and empty it would be. like real life :)

Imbecile is a noun, not an adjective, you imbecile.

If you look at 'Hateball's (name says it all) post history, under 'Lina Leandersson', you'll see that he is a paepophile... I've seen this idiot pop up with idiotic posts in so many places, it seems surreal

OP, I agree it's a sad existence if you don't have any "hope" beyond death, and "people" - like Hateball - are a testament to that.

I'm not religious; I probably, like most people, fall into the category of 'agnostic'. Although, like another person said, I don't see why you even brought it up. It's a big assumption on your part

You have to define higher purpose in life for yourself. If you let a religion or prophet do that for you, you're as foolish as the man who has no purpose.

Your point is that it is better to believe in nothing (religion) than not believe in anything ("existential vacuum")? Sounds like two sides of the same coin.

Good question. Strike the "where" and it's a better one. Can you not understand that with no evidence of an afterlife - besides the selfish desire to live forever - some people aren't going to buy in to the idea? It is equally valid to consider behaving a certain way until you die in the delusion of an eternal reward to be sad and empty. Doubly sad for throwing it in the public's face loaded with insults.

I thought it was a nicely observed film about being young, falling in love, holding hands, talking funny, the awkwardness of existence as it is for anyone between 14 and 18, school, small town life, those sorts of things.

It was a memory/slice of life/coming of age, WTF that has to do with God or Western values, I can't see.

We all grow up, we all fall in love, we all feel awkward at times, these are human truths - nothing more, nothing less.

Luckily we don't all have to read IMDB message boards, or watch films about them.
