Why is this movie so massively underrated?

When you look through the reviews, clearly, the majority of people are impressed. I thought this was by far Dwayne Johnson's best performance to date, he comes right back into the 'muscle man' side of things with a bang. The emotion in this film, to me, is quite astounding. As his brother dies you find yourself stirred in a way that he must have been at the time, as as he visits the house of his ex girlfriend and she shouts after him 'Kill them all' you find yourself cheering him on.

This movie to me is very stirring, the emotion included in this movie is hugely deceiving when it seems to portray a basic action movie. The soundtrack, also, is absolutely awesome. The song 'Goodbye My Friend' in particular I thought took this movie from good to brilliant. I've always been a fan of Dwayne Johnson, even since his WWE days everyone knew there was something special about him. He has the charisma that separates him from mere mortals like ourselves, and a gritty determination that gives him the means to succeed.

I honestly believe Dwayne Johnson is one of the diamonds of Hollywood and needs to be utilized in more dramatic roles, like in this movie combining both his obvious physical attributes and also his amazing acting ability is where you get the best out of 'The Rock'. There were rumours that when he went back into the WWE he was quitting acting, due to his frustration at being pigeonholed when it came to the roles available. Hollywood need to realise how good he is, he knows he can act and other people need to realise that too.

If you haven't yet, I suggest you watch this in HD to truly see the emotion and become enthralled in his journey. I watched this on Blu Ray and I couldn't tear my eyes away. I recognise this as, as I see it, a great movie by one of the best upcoming actors in Hollywood. It is ironic that it would be so underrated but there are those of us that love the movie and I just hope Dwayne Johnson perseveres and makes more movies with this amount of gripping emotion and edge of your seat anticipation in future, if not it truly would be a shame.

I COMPLETELY agree with you. On every part. But honestly, what do you think of the part in the alternate ending where driver is actually chased by cops??? I mean, even though this scenario is more plausible in the real world, i really liked the 'All is right with the world now' kinda deal. And let's face it, driver was no genius computer hacker that he could cover up his tracks as if he never existed...
Which ending do you prefer, in the area of whether driver walks away with his past finally cleared up or a man who is doomed to be on the run for the rest of his life????

I thought the original ending was bad.

The "badass" ending with the driver being chased made no sense, as all the tough guy nonsense would be over in seconds or at most minutes, as he was going to be arrested and put back in the slammer for the rest of his life.

And the final duel held no tension. We already knew that the driver was faster. The killer was just being a childish bad loser, who was acting dishonorably in not accepting that he'd already been spanked and let off, and was also ignoring a powerful motive to accept the result and move on: his wife.

The theatrical release with the bad ending cut off makes more sense to me. I like this version.

I thought Johnson's performance was great. I don't disagree with you there. But the rest of the movie just fell flat for me. There wasn't much tension or drama.

I agree, OP. I thought Rock's performance was terrific and well done. Definetely his best performance to date. I thought there was tension, that scene with Driver & Cop having the shootout was pretty suspensful. Because at that time you don't want either to get hurt. Even though you don't know the big twist at the end but you don't want either to get killed in that scene. Later on when Driver's debating in his head whether or not to kill the Minister, you're begging him not to do it. He was the only one that regretted everything that happened and wasn't like the rest. When he lets him go, you breathe a sigh of relief.

"I am the ultimate badass, you do not wanna `*beep*` wit' me!" Hudson in Aliens.

I'm with you Kuato. The spaghetti western back ground music, or BB's terrible wig, just killed all seriousness to this film. Unfortunately, I think the Rock will go the way of Will Smith or Clint Walker. Good actors, whose skill gets hidden by their physiques.

I also enjoyed this movie..

Duane Johnson played his role very well.
He was a little like the bad guys is Another 48 hours.

He definately has a physical threatening presence.

Agreed, movie is very underrated.

The first time I saw it I liked it & the second time I liked it even more.

It was taylor made for Dwayne J.

Excellent film, ending could have been better, but it shows The Rock isn't JUST as action star. Anyone who saw him in the WWE knows he's an amazingly talented actor.

It's kind of creepy. The brutal point blank killings, the lowlifes. Is Johnson supposed to be some kind of hero? There's no uplifting feel goodness about this, I suspect most people leave this film feeling like they've eaten something "off".

reply

I thought that the film was actually pretty good and was happy that Dwayne Johnson was doing something different from the usual kids films that he usually did.

what made this movie amazing was the killings and backstory .. 10 years in prison .. just waiting to get out to avenge the set up... every time he was about to kill someone i'd get my blood pumping big time ..

I just saw this movie for the second time and I have to say it's better than what I first thought about it. The Rock's character was just all serious business and no BS. The best was when he's in the bathroom with the bouncer staring him down and gearing up to fight. The past catches up with all the killers. The action was decent enough because I have high expectations. Perfect revenge movie is great like Kill Bill, V for Vendetta, Revenge, Lucky Number Slevin, I Spit On Your Grave, etc.

This is a shockingly good film. The trailer and previews left me cold, so I never bothered to see the film in the theater. What a mistake! Last month I caught it on The Movie Channel (in HD) and loved it. I've watched it three times since. Johnson is superb in this film. Hell, everybody is. Great story, writing, direction, music, photography, everything.

100% agree. Hugely underrated little sleeper.

I actually remember seeing this at the theater. It was in one of the smaller auditoriums, but I thought it was worth the money I spent on it. Such an underrated movie.

this film gets better and better with every viewing

and, ultimatly, i think that with every killer he kills, they all know whats coming but none of them accept it, until the end, where he eally does repent for his sins

and the "take no prisoners" attitude of the rock is the total opposite of the hitman who you begin to realise is only doing it for the thrill of doing it

i'm not good with words, but it's enough to say that this is one of my top ten films of the last 10 years, and i wouldn't be surprised if it went on to become as big a sleeper hit as the likes of the shawshank redeption or the usual suspects
