BRUTAL

I was intrigued by the trailer for the Hollywood remake and knew they’d water it down so I tracked down the Danish original, and I’m glad I did.

It’s brilliantly made and unnerving right from the off. I love how everything seemed fine but menacing music would start playing over the interactions. I find cringe comedy painful. This was that, times ten, minus the comedy - it was excruciating and only became worse and worse.

(Spoilers ahead)

I had no idea this was one of those fucked up European ‘horrors’ like Funny Games that crosses into savage darkness. This isn’t fun rollercoaster horror, it’s pitch black cinema that makes you want to slit your wrists, set yourself on fire and jump out of the window.

I say ‘horror’ because it’s not ultimately a genre film, it’s really an art film satirising social niceties that kicks you in the nuts, hard.

It’s not quite as sadistically punishing as Funny Games, but the ending is not far off. I really don’t need to see a sweet child get her tongue cut out in front of her helpless parents, who are then humiliated, stripped bare and stoned to death.

Much like a Lars Von Trier film, you’re genuinely concerned for the mental health of the filmmaker as credits roll.

Fuck me.

reply

Hey Melt', what say you to the woke remake?

reply

Is the remake woke?

From what I gather it’s just more ‘Hollywood’ with added thrills and a terrible watered down ending.

reply

There's definitely a common theme in play but it's worth a watch

reply

Funny Games... good one. I just started a thread comparing the feeling I had after Eden Lake. But yeah... you nailed it.

reply

Good post. You summed up my feelings. Some people disliked it because of the characters' choices. It doesn't bother me since they make the movie.

reply

Exactly, the choice to be nice even in the face of increasing danger to your family is the whole point, it maps on to how Europeans keep inviting more and more Islam into their countries even after the mass murder, butchery and industrial scale rape (including of children) that come with it.

reply

Yeaaah, you lost me with your xenophobic, Islamophobic far right rant there.

reply

Yeaaah, you lost me with your disingenuous attempt to reframe a fact based appraisal of Islam’s effect on European countries as ‘xenophobic’, ‘Islamophobic’ and most cringeworthy ‘far right’ 🤦🏻‍♂️

You suffer from the same suicidal niceness that Speak No Evil is ridiculing.

reply

Not believing immigrants and refugees go to a country to ravage it is being nice. Yeah, ok.

reply

In the case of Muslims, yes, all too many of whom end up murdering and raping the host population, to say nothing of disrespecting the host culture and imposing their own ideology on it.

Inviting more of this is suicidally nice, as is your complete denial of this aggression.

It’s no surprise that the couple are killed by stoning, and that the head of the operation is called Muhajid, and that the child is mutilated.

Now, demonstrate more of the ignorant and suicidal niceness that the film is ridiculing…

reply

There are more chances of those things happening to you by a local person. Fact. Bye.

reply

Absolutely horseshit. The rates of mass murder and mass child rape are vastly higher among the Muslim population per capita. You’re in total denial because you’ve been brain-fucked by the mainstream media and sinister outlets like The Guardian.

Speak No Evil is a condemnation of people like you.
