My first, and likely last, Lanthimos movie.

Put this off for a while but the high praise, cast and sex/nudity content enticed me... alas my instincts were right. Pure hipster nonsense.

Decent production values (though annoyingly quirky at the same time) and the actors do fine but nah this stuff isn't for me.

One of the best movies I have seen in long time. My favorite film of last year. A master work. It was all the way me. So, what would be you, then?

reply

That doesn't surprise me. Weird movies like this have that effect of being adored by some and hated by others. The nature of the beast.

My favorite movies of the past few years (2022-2024), in no particular order;
- Nosferatu
- Wicked
- Furiosa: A Mad Max Story
- Smile 2
- Smile
- Prey
- Alien: Romulus
- Evil Dead Rise
- The Substance
- Anora
- Dune: Part Two
- Strange Darling
- Barbarian
- Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
- The Northman

Nosferatu spectacular. The Substance, Anora fantastic. Alien:Romulus good. Mad Max Fury Road - a masterpiece - the other one was awful. I don’t think Northman was that good but Nosferatu and The Lighthouse are. You’re missing a lot on this list if it is from 2022-2024. Strange Darling - the most special.

But Wicked is deplorable.

I thought it was a good film, sure it's a quirky, hipsterish barrel of laughs. But hey, it is Lanthimos movie. What were you expecting? I suppose you could make a better film, right?

reply

No I couldn't and I didn't know what to expect really as I hadn't seen any Lanthimos movies prior, though I could tell from a mile off this would be a weird movie.

Fair enough, he is out there. I like his movies but I can't say the ones I've seen have been "great" films but they're solid movies in my opinion. I also really liked The Lobster. But again, if you didn't care for PT, you probably wouldn't like TL.

Good luck in finding movies that you like. haha...

Lot of weird stuff movies. Wes Anderson Grand Budapest Hotel. Magnolia Paul Thomas Anderson. All of Lynch. Fargeat The Substance. So many. The beauty of Yorgos movies is worth looking into. I thought Poor Things, in addition to being so clever with its Frankenstein roots, was one of the most visually beautiful Gaudi-like movies I’ve ever seen.

But I have to thank you. After seeing your list, I did watch Prey in the Comanche version and it was outstanding.
