Confused
Why does Edgar Allen Poe feature in this movie?
And why did Christian Bale sign up for this?
I can't describe it but, it feels like such a bare movie... Not bad or unenjoyable, just... Flat and normal?

I really don't understand any of the opinions on this film. To me, this felt like one of the most interesting and original movies I've seen in a while. Finally, something with some interesting ideas and style, completely free of wokery, and not a sequel, prequel, reboot or remake.
Why does Poe feature in it? Probably because he was an interesting guy in real life and his stories fit the subject matter, and he was actually a cadet at West Point. So the author of the book--which this film is based on--decided to use him as a character.
Why did Christian Bale sign up? Likely because he liked the story and thought the character of Landor would be interesting to explore.
I adored this movie. Best thing i've seen in years. I have a laundry list of personal tastes and interests and film techniques and it checked every single one of them. I watched it twice in a row. I haven't done that kind of thing since I was a kid.
shareGlad to find someone else who actually likes the film. I watched it, enjoyed it, told my dad about it, and he watched it and was pretty enthusiastic about it, too.
As I mentioned in another reply, the film to me kind of felt like a throwback to films we would get in the late-90s and early-00s. Specifically the vibe kind of reminded me of the Johnny Depp vehicles The Ninth Gate and From Hell.
I'm thinking I might read the book at some point.
