Like the other guy said, I just don't get all the hate AT ALL.....

This will be considerably long

Now I want to say first that I respect all fans of the original Star Trek tv series/movies 100%. And I understand everyone is entitled to his/her opinion.

In my opinion, Into Darkness does what a sequel should and then some. I loved the 2009 film(despite Eric Bana's Nero leaving much to be desired), but this one was even better.

So please explain and tell me why you like/dislike or agree/disagree:

1. John Harrison-Benedict Cumberbatch gave one of the best performances as a villain in recent memory as Khan IMO; but apparently "he's a 9/11 terrorist/he's white unlike the original? What's the problem?

2."The New movies suck!"-I know many die-hard fans personally who dislike this one(especially) and the 2009 film.

3. "JJ Abrams doesn't know (expletive) about Star Trek!"

4. Into Darkness is a propaganda film

5. "Khan is too Superman like" "Using his blood to resurrect Kirk was dumb/predictable"

6. "The scene with Alice Eve was stupid!" (As a straight male I don't get why this would be a problem)

7. It doesn't bring anything new?- This one I can kind of agree with-as there IS a Star Trek film out there called " Wrath of Khan"

8. It doesn't service Trekkies!

9. Star Trek Into Darkness is stupid?

Thoughts?

That's all I can think of for now, and too, for those who are die-hard fans of the original Trek films/shows I'd appreciate some recommendations.

Well I agree with you that Cumberbatch is insanely good in this... but then he is Benedict Cumberbatch... he could probably play a spoon and win an oscar for it... and that seemed to be the reaction from general audiences... he was kick-arse and he got good reception for it

And the film itself was well received... critics and the public both liked it... in fact I'd say it's considered better than the first one by most people... which is rare for a sequel

The main issue is simply from the original Star Trek fans and their issue with Khan... I do see it from their point of view... I mean this was a really beloved villain, and they just completely changed his character... not just how he looks, but his whole deal... if I was in the fandom and really cherished something and they just changed it completely, I would imagine I'd be kinda miffed off... so I do get it... perhaps if he really was just some dude named "John Harrison" then they wouldn't have been so offended and put off

But at the end of the day I think you'll find most people who aren't hardcore Trekkies actually like the film

I don't really watch star trek, I just went with a pal who had no one to go with, but I enjoyed it a lot.

Well, I have a counter question. Have you ever seen any of the original hundreds of hours of Star Trek series or movies? If you have, surely you'd be able to understand why people were upset with this bait and switch cash grab.

reply

It's ok OP. This will only be the most hated Trek film until the new one comes out. Then if that one does well and a 4th gets the green light, that one will be the most hated. So on and so forth. The new show will also be the worst show in the history of the franchise.

Trek fans are the f--king worst.

Into Darkness is a fantastic blockbuster and fantastic Trek. Oh no it like, redid a scene from Wrath of Khan! Yeah, it did...but with completely different context and meaning. The scenes are the same...but the dynamics are totally different. For a fanbase that goes on and on and on about how deeeeeeep and meaningfuuuuuuuullllll Trek is, they sure don't know how to read between the lines when they get a bug up their arse about something.

Thank you. Said more than enough and didn't have to rant.

This is a good movie and those who trash it are dead wrong. Benedict Cumberbatch, no matter who he is playing, is a phenomenal actor and was an excellent villain.

HOWEVER, Into Darkness is objectively NOT better than Star Trek...it's better than 1, 5, 7, 9, and 10 and about equal to 3, but it is not better than 2, 4, 6, 8, or 11. JUST SAYIN'!

Listen up Fives...a Ten is speaking.

His being the best villain in recent memory is an opinion. He was written like a generic action movie villain and didn't act anything like the old Khan. If had a generic villain in a Batman movie, stuck him in clown makeup and called him The Joker, despite his not acting at all like the character, the fan reaction would not be positive to say the least.

2."The New movies suck!"-I know many die-hard fans personally who dislike this one(especially) and the 2009 film.

I found the first one tolerable and actually quite liked Beyond. I really only strongly dislike this one.

3. "JJ Abrams doesn't know (expletive) about Star Trek!"

Neither did Nicholas Meyer or Harve Bennett (the writers of Wrath of Khan and other good Star Trek films) when they started out, but it didn't stop them from making good Star Trek stories, unlike this one.

4. Into Darkness is a propaganda film

It basically serves as a front for Orci's 9/11 conspiracy theory, so it kind of is.

6. "The scene with Alice Eve was stupid!" (As a straight male I don't get why this would be a problem)

Just started a thread about this- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1408101/board/thread/260864374?d=260864374#260864374

7. It doesn't bring anything new?- This one I can kind of agree with-as there IS a Star Trek film out there called " Wrath of Khan"

Not only that, it outright knocks off one of the most famous moments in the franchise, line for line, and expects me to have the same emotional reaction to it.

8. It doesn't service Trekkies!

There were loads of attempts at fan service that simply didn't work (tribbles, knocking off Wrath of Khan's ending, having a generic villain and female supporting character and calling them "Khan" and "Carol Marcus" to try and piggy back of the legacy of the old films, Section 31 referenes, exc.)
