I wanna be clear I don't intend for this to be an all out war of opinions on the two brothers. I"m just curious to know which of the brothers you personally like more. I'll start its easily Damon. A very complex but relatble character I have enjoyed seeing his development over the past 7 seasons. Everything about him is much more interesting than Stefan.
Yeah, I didn't enjoy Damon all that much in those two seasons then either but I still liked him more than the others... because they were all pretty horrible lol. I enjoyed human Katherine in the early episodes of S5, I liked Enzo when he first appeared and I liked Bonnie.
Def Damon, I like that he never pretends to be something he's not. He knows his faults and that self knowledge is his curse. He try's to be better but somehow always makes bad choices, He also is self sacrificing at times and a hero every now and then even though no one but Elena acknowledges that. Damon cares for others even though he doesn't want to admit it. Besides Elena, he has friendships with Rick, Bonnie, Liz, Carol Lockwood and Enzo. He also loves his brother. Stefan was never honest with Elena about who he really was until he had to be. It bothers me that he is always seen as the hero/good guy. He's done some things that are questionable,. Here are a few. Why did he tell his father about Katherine after promising not to? After all, that man was cruel and sadistic. What did he think would happen? He forced Damon to become a vampire. He blames Damon for him becoming a ripper, than abandons him, not caring that he was imprisoned and tortured. He encourages Jeremy to kill vampires causing him to nearly kill Elena after she breaks up with him for Damon. He agrees to trust Elija and Rebecca, which does result in Elenas death. He witnesses the possession of Matts body by travelers before Katherine takes over Elenas body, but it never occurs to him that it's Katherine, not Elena when she is taken over. I find this highly unlikely, even Elena tells him, "you know me better than anyone." So did he know? He "accidentally " touched Bonnie while she was the anchor and returned safely while Damon was left on the other side to die. He caused Caroline to turn off her emotions when he could have easily avoided doing so. I'm just saying, is Stefan the best guy?
He also didn't know Damon was captured by Augustine, before that, they were on outs, and after so, they were on the outs.
Katherine fooled everyone, including Damon so bad, he went on a killing spree, Caroline, Bonnie, Tyler, everyone got fooled. He's also the one who put it together.
Damon was trying to help him when he got him to feed, wasn't his fault he was a ripper. We don't know that he didn't know Damon was an Augustine prisoner but he was at the Salvatore house when they removed the body of Joseph Salvatore who betrayed Damon. Pappa Salvatore figured it out after Stefan went to him about Vampires. He didn't notice until then. Maybe he did touch Bonnie on purpose. He was the one who told Bonnie to take Elena through against her will then quickly followed by "accident ". If you remember, when Stefan was on the other side watching Caroline, Elena and Damon react to his death he looked angry, not sad. The way he acted after Damon "died"was suspicious also, lying to everyone about trying to find a way to save Bonnie and Damon while starting a new life. Maybe Enzo was right when he said "you're no brother to him." He treated Caroline badly, that was not the time to make things worse. And let's not forget the whole giving her the ok to feed Liz vamp blood to cure cancer when he obviously knew it wouldn't work. Damon knew and said so.Why didn't Stefan? The guilt from that fiasco helped push her over the edge. Also unnecessary, burning the letter from Liz. He could have shown her the vision of Liz without burning the letter. Still wonder what was in that letter. Yes he killed Andy, I'm talking about not so obvious things. I always remember what Bonnie said to Elena S1 Ep4 "unless he's a calculating, manipulative liar." Meaning Stefan.Elena"Stefan is none of those things." Bonnie "Yea? How do you know."
He didn't touch Bonnie on purpose, he states in 5x10 he didn't know about Damon in Augustine, he also didn't rat Katherine out to papa Salvatore,, and he didnt not search for Damon because he didn't want him back, I'm sure he was in tears in that crypt because he was glad Damon died lol.
Bonnie's visions, (numbers, crows, cemetery, fog) was about Damon. He told Damon he didn't want to feed. This "not so obvious stuff" are giant reaches.
You say he didn't touch Bonnie on purpose I say maybe he did. He went to his father after promising he wouldn't. He didn't have to say her name, the results were the same. You're right, he wanted him gone, forever, that's my point. As far as being in tears over Damons death, if you've noticed, Stefan has a history of doing horrible things and then suffering great remorse for having done them. So not so giant a leap. Bonnie's visions were about Damon, you're point is? Cause I wasn't talking about that.
It has been fairly obvious to me that there isn't an awful lot in it with regards to who is the bad/better brother, the storytelling across the series indicates that they are both equally as capable of being bad as well as good. What tips the balance for me is exactly what you said, ultimately Damon has the emotional intelligence to recognise this about himself and refrains from moral self righteousness speeches. He doesn't pretend to want to save the world, he owns the fact that he wants to save the people he cares about and will do what has to be done to get that done even if it means sacrificing himself or others (that he doesn't care about) to do it.
Stefan. I don't hate damon, but I've always loved stefan more. Stefan is really caring, passionate and his heart is pure. He deserves the world. But Damon also deserves happiness cause he has been through a lot.
