Do-Over

A lot of old shows seem to be getting remakes/do-overs/etc thanks to Netflix and others.

If you were given the chance to redo TVD from the beginning, what would you change, what would you keep the same? Would you take the show in an entirely different direction or would you more-or-less head down the same route save a few changes?

I'm on nightshift and bored as hell. Humour me :)

I would not let Julie Plec or Caroline Dries anywhere near it! But seriously, I think this show had the potential to be one of the greats were it not for them so here is what I would have liked to see done differently:

1. Katherine should have lived and been redeemed. I also would have liked to see her end up with one of the brothers. I think Elena could have gone much darker vampire for awhile (vs just stupid and vapid), and then ultimately been redeemed in some way, maybe in death.

2. Bonnie should have been more powerful and should have had more agency. I would have loved to see her interact with more witches, particularly from her bloodline. We should have gotten to see more of the Bennets and their lore. She also needs a love interest that isn't thrown in at the last minute.

3. This show absolutely destroyed every girl on this shows agency and character. I would have liked to see them become stronger, not weaker and obsessed with these murderous men. I am ok with the ships, but the way they're portrayed is so whiney and the girls become props to the men. Elena was initially the star, and it sucks that that got lost so that the show could worship at Damon's altar. I think Delena could have been an epic ship, it just didn't play out that way for me when Elena was constantly not in control of her feelings.

4. Longer arcs. I think it would have been helpful for the show to have an overarching story in mind, one they could drive towards. It seems like each season has 3 arcs and as a result, it's not really a cohesive show. There are a lot of OOC moments and plot devices and the plot drives characterization just so they can get to the end of the season.

I did like the casting, for the most part. I think it will be hard to see another Elena/Katherine and another Damon, but I think the rest could be recast. I loved the Originals storyline and the werewolf stuff, so I would keep that. And maybe more Gemini coven.

I loved season 1, and there is hardly nothing I would change about season 1, beside I would not have killed Viki off. I think in order to make Elena and company more believable they need at least one person who doesn't like Elena.

Out of the top of my head:
No Sybil, but the Kitsune Shinichi and Misao like in the books.
Shapeshifting like in the novels, I wanted to see Damon as black wolf fight Katherine's white tiger.
Stefan ends up with Katherine, who stays alive. Stefan doesn't loose his game like in the show.
Bonnie ends up with Damon; she will be a powerful witch again.
Elena ends up with Elijah.
Caroline ends up with Klaus.
Rebekah ends up with Rose.
Matt ends up dead.
It has to be clearer that the sire bond turned Elena into Damon's Renfield. Not that only executing direct orders BS.
No Travelers in S5, but more Qetsiyah and Silas.
Vampire blood's magic heals everything including cancer. Bc magic. Even Plec's Kyle XY could heal cancer.
No Jeremy but the little sister from the books to be leveraged against Elena.

I'd probably change everything from seasons 4-8

-Klaus and Caroline don't sleep together. Tyler returns to Mystic Falls, and he's gotten vengeance out of system. Caroline and Tyler end up together (mind you, I thought that Klaroline scene was super hot and would love them to end up together but it makes no sense to who she is)

-Elena waits a while before sleeping w Damon in season 4. But they do, and they have a relationship throughout season 4 as she's adjusting to vampirism. None of that sire bond sh-t or humanity switch off crap. She comes to realize Damon and her are incompatible because Damon cannot change who he is, and she doesn't want him to have to fake it just for her. He wants to be evil, let him be. Away from her. Ideally, Damon dies. But before that, he and Elena have struck up a friendship. He's the pitbull that she sometimes needs to use.

-Elena takes the cure, and she realizes she has always loved Stefan. Stefan's had flings with Val or Rebekah at this point, but he slowly forgives Elena and they fall back in love. He takes the cure after her and the show ends with their wedding. Stefan has his brief fling with Rebekah and even Valerie, if need be, during his and Elena's season or two of separation.

-Katherine does NOT die! Ugh, I hate that she did. But yeah, she lives and she moved to New Orleans after Elijah comes back to Mystic Falls to tell her to join him. She stops running and Klaus has other priorities.

-Honestly idk about Bonnie. She has powers, she grows as a witch but balances herself. I can't see an endgame for her because she's always been paired with such boring people or outright nonsensical people. Alaric, maybe? As weird as it is, I could have seen it. He's the least awful, most mature, most human, and understanding of her magic.

Hell, I may just pretend this is how the show ended.

Actually it made sense to who she is/was. She was sexually attracted to him from get-go and she got it out of her system. But the fact that she basically had sex with him so that he leaves her alone tells a lot about her.

Definitely. It was in bad taste for her to so quickly jump from one brother to another's bed.

1) I'd pretty much leave seasons 1-3 the same, except I would've emphasised exactly how strong The Originals were. I lost count of how many times Rebecca was daggered and the fact that Matt was able to take down an Original really bothered me.

2) I would've scrapped the whole ghosts/Other Side/Resurrection crap. It just took all the tension away about characters dying cos then we all knew they could come back.

3) I never would have turned the show into Dopplegangerpalooza and would've scrapped Silas all together. I would've kept Jeremy dead and the main focus of season 4 (at least the last half) would have been about humanity-less Elena wreaking havoc on Mystic Falls and how the group brings her back.

4) Bonnie''s powers would have had limits so that she couldn't solve every single problem, and every spell would've had consequences like in the early seasons. Her powers would've grown organically over the course of the show until she was finally the uber witch all her fans want to see.

5) I would've killed Tyler a long time ago.

6) No vamp pregnancy, syphon babies or heretics that completely ruined the mythology set beforehand.

7) I would not have killed off Katherine, but I would not have redeemed her, either. She would've ended up alone, as someone who has committed such horrible acts should. I also never would've brought her daughter back as it really didn't add anything to her character.

8) I wouldn't have shoved Delena to the forefront and made the show more of an ensemble piece.

9) I would have kept Kai alive. He was just too much fun to kill off.

10) Most of all, I would have ended the show at season 6.

Oh, I forgot to add that I never would have had "the cure." That entire storyline really baked my noodle and made the impact of becoming a vampire much less impactful.

Not much I would disagree with here đź‘Źđź‘Ź

Bonnie would have more important storylines.

I would include Elijah, Rebekah, and Kol in more episodes instead of them being daggered often. Also, Kol wouldn’t have been killed.

Elena with Stefan, Bonnie with Damon or Bonnie with Kai, Caroline with Tyler. I do like Klaroline chemistry, but she doesn’t really like him as much as he likes her. Matt doesn’t want to deal with supernaturals, so he leaves town. Jeremy doesn’t become a Brotherhood of the Five hunter. Jo stays alive and her and Alaric leave town to live a normal life. Also, Alaric would have never become an enhanced original.

When Elena is changed into a vampire, she would have less issues. Maybe she wouldn't even be changed into a vampire. Also, no sire bond. No cure storyline, because I found it too repetitive.

Katherine will be the only doppelganger.

No Sybil and no Reyna Cruz. Also no heretics, because it’s not consistent with the mythology. And no Julian or Lily, because they are too 1-dimensional. Another reason why I wouldn’t have Lily, and also why I wouldn’t have Sarah, is because it was already established that Damon and Stefan only have each other as family, so it takes away from the meaning of the story for family members to suddenly show up.

Damon complains less, especially when he says “I can’t be a good person, I’m only being good for Elena, etc.” Damon would be more like season 1, except that Lexi would still be alive.

If a character does something evil, the other characters wouldn’t forgive right away, for example, when Damon killed Jeremy and Elena quickly forgave him, which is unrealistic.

I would change so damn much.

1. Fire Caroline Dries and Julie Plec and hire a more diverse cast
2. I'd give Bonnie the storylines she deserves. I'd explore her witch heritage and her family. She'd be more self-assured, less sacrificing herself for everyone else, and the other characters would treat her with the respect she deserves and she'd have a epic love interest
3. Less story lines centred around Damon
4. Give Katherine her redemption (I don't understand how Klaus and Damon deserve redemption but Katherine didn't)
5. I wouldn't let Elena become all about the Salvatore's. She'd still be her own, caring, compassionate self.
6. I don't know what an Alaric is
7. GRAMS WOULD STILL BE ALIVE
8. Lucy Bennett
9. Stefan would have storylines outside of his brother
10. No villains watered down for the sake of romantic storylines
11. A real dark!Bonnie storyline, not that *beep* they fed us in season 4
12. A big emphasis on friendships and family relationships
13. I would take more time to flesh out the storylines they've had instead of rushing through them in 10 or so episodes (TVD has had some good storylines the issue is they never spent the proper time and just kept trying to one up themselves and go bigger and bigger)
14. Tyler would get the treatment he deserves (I actually love Tyler's development on the show, I'd just give it more depth)
15. Make Matt useful
16. Bisexual Bonnie
17. I'd give Bonnie the weave she deserves
18. Caroline being more involved in their plots and ploys and less focus on her love life
19. Not every single parent would be dead.
20. I'd axe that awful doppelganger/traveller storyline.

I have more but i'll leave it there
